The project “Prevention, reduction and recycling of fishing gear waste causing pollution in Vietnam's seas” is funded by the Ministry for the Environment, Resource Conservation, Nuclear Security and Consumer Protection of the Federal Republic of Germany, implemented from 2023 to 2026.
Kien Giang University is one of three universities in Vietnam that cooperates with Ostfalia University of Applied Sciences (Federal Republic of Germany) and some other partners to implement the project. Kien Giang University is responsible for implementing the project in the Kien Giang sea area (now An Giang province).
Damaged or stranded fishing gear left at sea by fishermen pollutes the environment, destroys fish breeding grounds, and seriously affects aquatic resources and the marine economy .
In the project, Kien Giang University implemented many activities, focusing on raising awareness among fishermen and ship owners about the harmful effects of fishing gear waste on fishing grounds, the marine economy as well as the benefits of recycling fishing gear waste.
The unit was sponsored a recycling room, fully equipped with modern machinery with a total cost of more than 2 billion VND to serve the recycling of fishing gear waste.
