Deputy Chief Minister Arun Sao said the collision had severely damaged several coaches of the passenger train. Indian railway officials said the cause of the incident was under investigation.

Television images showed the first carriage of the train mangled, lying on top of the last carriage of the freight train, while police and rescue teams searched for survivors among crowds of people gathered near the scene.

India's rail network, the world's fourth-largest, is currently undergoing a $30 billion modernization, with high-speed trains and new stations. However, rail accidents remain common.

In 2023, India witnessed one of the worst rail disasters in history, when three trains collided in Odisha state, killing 288 people and injuring more than 1,000.
