People are buying and stockpiling.
According to the latest information from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development on disaster prevention and control at 9:00 AM on September 11th, 30,700 hectares of crops were flooded and damaged (concentrated in Hai Phong 2,614ha; Nam Dinh 509ha; Thai Binh 3,345ha; Hanoi 4,046ha; Hai Duong 3,000ha; Hoa Binh 6,728ha; Lang Son 1,393ha…).
In fact, due to the current storm and flood situation, the price of green vegetables at traditional markets in Hanoi has doubled compared to normal days, while it remains stable at supermarkets.
People are rushing to buy and stockpile food due to fears of shortages. The most sought-after items are mainly vegetables, meat, bread, and some types of dried goods.
According to observations by a reporter from Lao Dong newspaper at 11:00 AM on September 11th, at a supermarket on Ton That Thuyet Street (Cau Giay District, Hanoi), the number of shoppers and food items was not excessively large. However, the vegetable counters were almost completely empty, with only a few types of fresh herbs like coriander and lettuce remaining.
In addition, dry goods like bread are attracting more attention and are being bought more frequently. Other fresh foods such as beef, pork, and chicken are constantly being restocked by supermarkets.

Speaking to a reporter from Lao Dong Newspaper, Ms. Nguyen Thi Mai (Cau Giay, Hanoi) said: "Since this morning, I've been to the supermarket twice but haven't been able to buy a single bunch of vegetables to cook for dinner. I've been carrying my shopping basket for ages and still haven't found anything. Should I just go home empty-handed again?"
At another supermarket on Me Tri Thuong Street (Nam Tu Liem district), the most popular items purchased by customers were also vegetables and bread. Supermarket staff had to constantly restock and distribute more food to the shelves.
Not only in supermarkets, but also in local markets, goods are selling well due to the herd mentality of people rushing to buy and stockpile. Despite heavy rain since morning, according to Ms. Nguyen Thi Thuong, a vendor at Me Tri Thuong market, her vegetables are selling much better than usual.
Another vegetable vendor at Me Tri Thuong market also said that she didn't want to sell at higher prices than usual, but the high import costs and disrupted supply due to flooding forced her to increase the prices of vegetables.
Supplementing food supplies for the North.
Speaking with a reporter from Lao Dong Newspaper, Mr. Nguyen Tien Dung – Deputy General Director of WinMart Chain – said that all four WinEco farms in the North, including Ha Nam , Quang Ninh, Tam Dao, and Hai Phong, have been completely devastated. The fields are flooded, the orchards have collapsed, roofs have been blown off, and almost all of the produce has been lost.
However, nearly 100 tons of essential vegetables are transported daily from the South and Lam Dong to the North. This is WinEco's effort to ensure the supply of vegetables for the people, while also compensating for the shortage caused by damage to farms in the North after Typhoon Yagi, especially common vegetables such as spinach, sweet cabbage, green cabbage, bok choy, gourds, bitter melon, and many other items. Notably, WinEco's agricultural products sold at WinMart, WinMart+, and WIN supermarket chains have not increased in price, helping to stabilize the market.

Furthermore, to ensure a stable supply of goods from the North until the end of the month, WinEco is stepping up production at farms in Lam Dong and the South to maintain a stable supply for the Northern market and stabilize prices for consumers after the impact of Typhoon Yagi.
“Currently, the transportation of goods from the Supra warehouse to WinMart supermarkets and WinMart+/WiN stores is facing obstacles due to flooding and landslides in the northern provinces. However, we have promptly implemented solutions to ensure timely supply of goods to serve the people. We ensure that goods are always fully stocked at our central warehouses and ready for distribution to supermarkets/stores. We have selected supermarkets and stores with large areas and easy access for goods delivery to be designated as pickup points. Our staff at these supermarkets/stores will receive the goods and deliver them to supermarkets/stores that our delivery trucks cannot reach.”
Currently, WinMart/WinMart+/WiN in areas affected by storms and floods are also facing many difficulties regarding damage to facilities and goods, but we are making every effort to maintain operations, stabilize prices for consumers and ensure social welfare,” Mr. Nguyen Tien Dung affirmed.
According to a representative from MM Mega Market, solutions to increase the supply of vegetables from Lam Dong province will likely ensure sufficient supply for the next 1-2 weeks. However, the transportation of goods to end consumers will be affected.
Meanwhile, representatives from other retailers such as Saigon Co.op... reported that they are continuing to increase the supply of vegetables from Lam Dong to the North. Each day, additional trucks bring vegetables to Hanoi, from where they are transported to supermarkets in other provinces.
Millions of helping hands reach out to our compatriots affected by storms and floods.
Storms and floods have caused severe damage and disruption in many provinces in the northern region.
