Focus on supporting people to soon stabilize their lives after the flood

That was the request of comrade Dang Hong Sy, Standing Deputy Secretary of Lam Dong Provincial Party Committee, during his visit to inspect the flood situation in Ham Thang ward this morning, November 1.

Standing Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee Dang Hong Sy requested that localities concentrate forces to help people overcome the consequences of natural disasters and soon stabilize their lives.

According to local reports, from October 26 to 31, Ham Thang ward experienced widespread flooding due to prolonged heavy rain combined with flood discharge from Song Quao Lake and Song Khan Lake, causing the water level of Cai River to rise, overflowing, causing flooding in 18/19 neighborhoods of the ward.

Among them, Kim Binh, Kim Ngoc, Thang Thuan, Phu Hoa, Phu Thinh, Phu Xuan and Phu My neighborhoods were most severely affected.

As soon as the situation was understood, the Ward Civil Defense Command deployed forces according to the "4 on-site" principle, mobilizing regular militia, police and grassroots security forces to deep flooded areas to support the evacuation of people and property.

On the morning of October 29, the Ward People's Committee held an urgent meeting with the participation of Party leaders, neighborhoods and core forces to assign on-site support forces to directly help people.

Authorities help move people to safety

Statistics show that about 5,726/12,797 households (accounting for 44% of the total number of households) had their houses flooded under 0.5m. 826 households with 2,624 people were flooded over 0.5m deep and had to be urgently evacuated, of which 315 households with 1,115 people had to be evacuated to ensure safety.

The evacuation is concentrated in the neighborhoods of Phu Hoa, Phu Thanh, Thang Hoa, Phu Xuan, Thang Thuan, Ung Chiem, Phu An, Kim Binh, Thang Hiep and Kim Ngoc. In particular, group 9, Kim Ngoc neighborhood continues to monitor and evacuate 49 households with 248 people because the water has not receded.

In the recent flood, the estimated damage as of October 31 was more than 10 billion VND. In the production sector, the flood affected about 275.6 hectares of various crops, including vegetables, rice and dragon fruit in many neighborhoods.

About 10.25 hectares of aquaculture area were damaged, mainly tiger shrimp. In addition, many production equipment such as water pumps were damaged, especially in Phu My quarter.

Comrade Tran Ngoc Hien, Chairman of Ham Thang Ward, said that the locality has immediately implemented measures to support the evacuation of people to a safe place.

In the rescue work, thanks to the direction of the Provincial People's Committee and the support from departments, branches, armed forces and benefactors, on the night of October 30 and the morning of October 31, the locality was reinforced with 3 canoes and 15 jet skis to promptly evacuate people from the danger zone, before the military force of Region 5, Mui Ne Border Guard Station and Provincial Police continued to coordinate the rescue.

At the same time, more than 3,900 meals per day were mobilized to support people in evacuation areas and households that have not yet been evacuated.

Currently, the Ward People's Committee is continuing to synthesize and assess the damage and carry out disinfection. The locality also requested the Provincial Military Command and Border Guard to continue to arrange rescue vehicles until the upstream reservoirs stop releasing floodwaters and the water recedes completely.

Comrade Dang Hong Sy highly appreciated the support work of the government and people of Ham Thang ward.

Speaking at the inspection, comrade Dang Hong Sy assessed that this was a widespread flood; in which Ham Thang ward was one of the most severely damaged localities.

Comrade Dang Hong Sy praised the deployment of rescue forces according to the "4 on-site" motto, supporting people in times of natural disasters and floods. With the efforts of the entire political system, the cooperation of the people, especially volunteers who used jet skis to take people to safety, contributed to minimizing human and property damage.

In the coming time, the locality will continue to pay attention to and support the lives of people who are isolated and at evacuation sites. Local authorities, police and military forces will continue to monitor weather developments and flood discharge from upstream reservoirs to have plans to support people in a timely manner when situations arise.

After the flood situation has passed, Ham Thang ward must inspect and accurately count the damage caused by the flood, and report to the province to have a timely support plan.

Localities need to arrange forces to help people clean their houses and sanitation when the floodwaters recede so that people can soon stabilize their lives. Coordinate with the Department of Health and the Center for Preventive Medicine to deploy measures to disinfect and sanitize the environment, to prevent the outbreak of epidemics and diseases after the flood.

In the long term, the Standing Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee requested the local authorities to conduct surveys and develop plans to clear and expand the flow of rivers and canals in the fields, and resolutely handle cases of encroachment on river corridors to ensure flood drainage when heavy rains occur.

At the meeting, comrade Dang Hong Sy presented 1 billion VND from the officials and people of Lam Dong province to support Ham Thang ward to overcome the consequences of damage caused by storms and floods.
