All households in Cat Hai special economic zone classify waste at source.

Waste classification at source in Cat Hai special economic zone (Hai Phong) is being implemented synchronously, with 7,762 households participating, contributing to improving the effectiveness of environmental management and protection.

The inspection team inspected the site at Gia Luan Primary and Secondary School.

On the afternoon of November 21, the working group of the Hai Phong City Women's Union supervised the implementation of source-based household waste classification in Cat Hai special economic zone.

The monitoring team conducted field inspections at a number of households and schools in the area.

Accordingly, the work of classifying waste at source in Cat Hai special zone was implemented synchronously. All 7,762 households have classified waste at source, reaching 100%, of which more than 6,100 households have equipped themselves with 2-compartment trash cans (reaching 78.6%) with a total purchase cost of more than 1.1 billion VND.

12 models of “Self-managed residential areas classifying waste” have been effectively maintained. All 19 schools have included source-based waste classification and plastic waste reduction in the criteria for evaluating green, clean, beautiful, and safe schools.

The monitoring team inspected the reality at some households.

However, the process of classifying waste at source still faces difficulties such as lack of collection vehicles and lack of uniformity; some people do not classify thoroughly; after sorting, waste is still transported to common landfills because there is no treatment area for each type of waste.

During the monitoring session, the People's Committee of the special zone proposed that the city have an investment plan to build the Ang Cha Cha waste treatment area phase 2 using non-electric waste incineration technology to improve treatment efficiency, meeting the need for waste treatment arising in the next phase. It is proposed that the city agree in principle and provide additional funding for the special zone to purchase graders to carry out treatment work at the Ang Cha Cha landfill, and purchase ships to collect and scoop up garbage in the bay.

Supplement annual budget for environmental activities to ensure the ordering of services for collection, transportation, treatment of waste, wastewater and waste classification at source in the area.

The People's Committee of the special zone also proposed to maintain the regulations on the color of packaging and equipment containing other remaining domestic solid waste as "yellow" according to the provisions of Decision No. 60/2023/QD-UBND dated December 25, 2023 of the City People's Committee.

The monitoring team records local recommendations and proposals; synthesizes and reports to competent authorities for consideration and resolution according to regulations.
