A robotic diving vehicle deployed from a Canadian ship discovered debris from the submersible Titan on the morning of June 22 on the seabed about 488 meters from the bow of the Titanic, 4,000 meters below the surface. The debris is located in a remote corner of the North Atlantic Ocean, US Coast Guard Rear Admiral John Mauger said.
Officials said five major pieces of the 6.7-meter-long Titan submersible were found among the debris left after the vessel broke apart. However, there was no information on whether any bodies had been found.
"The debris shows that a catastrophic explosion occurred in the pressure chamber," Mr. Mauger said.
Earlier, OceanGate - the company that operates the Titan submersible, issued a statement saying that there were no survivors, including the founder and CEO of the company Stockton Rush. Mr. Rush was the operator of the vessel.
The other four passengers are British billionaire and explorer Hamish Harding, 58; Pakistani businessman Shahzada Dawood, 48, and his 19-year-old son, Suleman, all British citizens; and French oceanographer and renowned Titanic expert Paul-Henri Nargeolet, 77, who has visited the wreck dozens of times.
“These men were true explorers who shared a distinct spirit of adventure and a deep passion for exploring and protecting the world 's oceans,” OceanGate said in a statement. “Our hearts go out to the five souls and every member of their family during this tragic time.”
The Titan submersible carrying five people went missing on June 18 after about 1 hour and 45 minutes of exploring the wreck of the Titanic deep in the North Atlantic. International rescue forces have been searching for the ship and its passengers for five days.
