On May 28, the Institute of Oceanography , Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST) in collaboration with the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) organized a scientific workshop "Cooperation between VAST and RAS in marine biodiversity and biochemistry surveys, outstanding achievements, roadmap 2018 - 2025 and prospects".

The above workshop was held after a nearly 1-month survey trip in the East Sea by the ship Academician Oparin.

During the survey from May 1 to 25, Russian and Vietnamese scientists on the ship Academician Oparin collected 6,500 biological samples and 2,500 environmental samples in coastal and deep sea areas in the southern waters of Vietnam.

The above collections were focused by scientists on analyzing factors related to marine pollution, the presence and accumulation of microplastics, persistent organic compounds, and developing remote sensing data for environmental monitoring and aquaculture.

Professor Chau Van Minh - President of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology - said that over 20 years of cooperation (2005 - 2025), scientists from the two countries have conducted 9 surveys on marine biodiversity and biochemistry using the ship Academician Oparin in Vietnam's waters.

According to Mr. Minh, in the past 8 years, the ship Academician Oparin has conducted 4 survey trips at 474 stations from North to South Vietnam's sea, including outpost island areas, collecting nearly 17,000 marine biological samples for research on biodiversity and bioactive substances.

"This is a very valuable source of scientific information, contributing to the general understanding of the conditions of Vietnam's marine environmental resources, guiding the work of management, protection and sustainable exploitation," said Mr. Minh.

Through the above survey trips, the two sides jointly published a total of 64 scientific works, including 33 scientific works in international journals in the ISI list, 3 monographs along with many other national scientific articles.

Online from Russia, Professor Yury Kulchin - Vice President of the Russian Academy of Sciences, President of the Far Eastern Branch - emphasized that the joint survey trips over the past 20 years have contributed significantly to affirming the importance of scientific cooperation in strengthening relations between Russia and Vietnam, and are also an important premise for scientists of the two countries to build a roadmap for research cooperation in the next 10 years.
