Falling in love with Hai Phong
Bringing a rice variety originating from highland areas like Te Nuong Ha Giang to coastal plains - where there is high humidity, often facing the risk of flooding, especially the increasingly serious saline intrusion - is a bold experiment.

However, after careful research, Quang Phuc Agricultural Production - Business - Service Cooperative (Tien Minh Commune, Hai Phong City) proactively cooperated with An Dat Thanh Company Limited to realize this idea. After a trial production period in 2022, the Ha Giang Te Nuong rice variety was expanded by local people to a larger area from the 2024 crop and has now been widely planted.
Mr. Nguyen Van Tien - Director of Quang Phuc Agricultural Production - Business - Service Cooperative said that up to now, the Cooperative has put into production three crops of Te Nuong Ha Giang rice, each crop on 40 hectares.
According to Mr. Tien, although grown on local saline soil, the Ha Giang Te Nuong rice variety still shows outstanding advantages such as being easy to care for and requiring less fertilizer than other rice varieties. This not only helps farmers significantly reduce investment costs but also contributes to minimizing environmental impacts by using less agricultural chemicals.
“Currently, the Cooperative has harvested more than 3 hectares of Te Nuong Ha Giang rice, with an average yield of approximately 250 kg of fresh rice per sao. This is a high yield for saline land like this field,” said Mr. Nguyen Van Tien.
One of the biggest "plus points" of this rice variety is its excellent resistance to blast disease, including leaf blast and neck blast. These are diseases that often cause serious damage to rice plants, especially in unfavorable weather conditions. This disease resistance helps farmers reduce the risk of crop failure and the cost of spraying pesticides.

In particular, the Te Nuong Ha Giang rice variety also shows outstanding adaptability to adverse weather conditions. Mr. Tien cited that in the spring crop of 2025, when the prolonged cold weather was not favorable for rice growth, the Te Nuong Ha Giang variety still grew well. In the 2024 crop, when storm No. 3 (Yagi) made landfall, causing many other rice varieties to collapse and suffer heavy crop failures, the Te Nuong Ha Giang rice still stood firm and gave high yields.
This resilience to natural disasters is a key factor in providing peace of mind and income security for farmers in the context of increasingly extreme weather. In terms of productivity, this rice variety also achieved impressive results, in the spring crop of 2025, the fresh rice yield reached 330kg/sao (sao 360m2), or more than 9 tons/ha.
Introduced to become the main variety of Tan Minh region
Mrs. Pham Thi Nam in Vinh Quang residential group, Phu Lien ward (Hai Phong city) although not directly producing Te Nuong Ha Giang rice variety, is very impressed with this rice variety. She said that through observing the last 2 crops, she found that this rice variety has high yield, sturdy plants, and few pests and diseases. In particular, the rice gives soft, delicious rice.
“Now people here like to grow this rice variety because it gives higher yield. Today, I and some people went with the leaders of the Economic - Infrastructure and Urban Department of the ward to directly survey again before bringing this rice variety back to Phu Lien for widespread propagation,” said Ms. Nam.

In the 2025 crop season, Quang Phuc Agricultural Production - Business - Service Cooperative produced Te Nuong Ha Giang rice variety on an area of 50 hectares. With unexpected results, the unit is planning to expand the production scale of this rice variety in the coming crops. "We will mobilize people to expand the area to 70 - 100 hectares in the coming crops with the hope of making Te Nuong Ha Giang rice variety the main variety of Tan Minh region," Mr. Tien shared.
The initial success of the Ha Giang Te Nuong rice variety production model in Hai Phong is a vivid demonstration of the potential of diversifying crop structures, effectively exploiting specific soils and proactively responding to the challenges of climate change in agricultural production, especially in the context of complex saline intrusion that is increasingly affecting coastal areas.
The Hai Phong Agricultural Extension Center said that in the past time, it has monitored and evaluated the initial positive results of the Te Nuong Ha Giang rice variety produced in Hai Phong. In the future, if there is evidence that this rice variety is suitable for the local soil and climate, has high yield and quality, and complies with regulations, there will be guidance for people to expand production.
In the 2025 crop, the entire Hai Phong city planted about 80,000 hectares of rice, and many places have already harvested with yields ranging from 58 to 60 quintals/hectare. With the current yield, the Te Nuong Ha Giang rice variety will be one of the choices of Hai Phong farmers in the coming crops, especially in low-lying and saline areas.
