The Huy's happy moment when he brought his personal recital to Hanoi for the first time
And beyond expectations, both recital nights were enthusiastically supported by the audience. In Ho Chi Minh City, the joy was warm and familiar, like coming home. In Hanoi, Huy was moved because it was the first time he brought his personal recital to the capital and was received with such warm affection.
Everything is exactly as the 9x tenor's wish: "to be sung is to be seen" (to sing to be seen and understood). Because "for the audience, the programme (list of songs) is just the repertoire of the performance. But for classical singers, it is the result of a process".
But To be sung is to be seen is not only progress after a year of studying abroad, but also the sweet fruit marking The Huy's 10-year journey of continuously pursuing his passion for opera.
10 years of enduring love for opera
In 2015, Huy was admitted to the Ho Chi Minh City Conservatory of Music. At that time, Huy did not know what was taught there, he just loved singing and asked his father to let him take the entrance exam to study singing. But the more he studied, the more Huy became fascinated by the vast and emotional world of opera, and without realizing it, he fell in love.
Understanding that choosing classical music is a narrow path: few stages to perform, and a picky audience, since his student days, Huy has tried to find ways to create opportunities for himself and his friends.
From applying to join the HBSO Choir, organizing student vocal shows to the first opera-one-man projects in collaboration with teacher Vinh Lac, Huy did not wait but always proactively connected, seizing every opportunity to burn out with passion.
Then came days of diligently learning everything, from connecting with sponsors, contacting parties, finding a stage, translating and printing content, designing invitations, arranging each chair... to "dare" to organize and leave an impression with a series of nearly 20 recitals by tenor Thế Huy over the past three years.
While he was on the way to organizing a successful recital and having his own audience, Huy went to Australia alone to take the exam and was admitted to the Sydney Conservatory of Music, continuing to develop his opera performance expertise.
After a year of studying and working part-time, Huy still tried to return to Vietnam to meet the audience, and not "get tired of the profession" by organizing his own recitals. Huy still did the shows himself from A to Z to save costs because everything was just enough to cover expenses, not losing money, let alone profit.
"Before each performance, there are always dozens of things to do. But Huy still manages to do everything smoothly like a natural mechanism. Huy doesn't feel tired or pressured, because this is what he loves and wants to do!" - the 9x tenor smiled gently.
Few people know that behind those neat stages and smiles is an early childhood, the awareness that one's starting point is not as good as others, one must work harder, and sleepless nights worrying about the future path...
Asked Huy if he ever felt exhausted on his journey of constant effort? Huy smiled, yes!
Huy is striving for his 'most ambitious' dream: to become a true international opera artist.
Journey of the dream conqueror
10 years of working with opera, for Huy, is a journey to conquer dreams. The dream of a student who wants to learn to sing better, of a young tenor who wants to have his own stage, of a Vietnamese student studying abroad standing in front of the legendary Sydney Opera House...
And at the end of last year, Huy had three nights singing with the Sydney Choir in the auditorium of his dream "shell" theater.
"Standing there, in the middle of a big stage, singing for a giant audience where everyone was enjoying the music they loved, was truly a dream come true" - Huy recounted in a state of elation.
Being accepted as one of the 28 members of the Sydney choir was also a source of great pride for Huy in the past year. As the only Vietnamese candidate among a "forest" of talents from countries strong in classical music, Huy told himself that he only went to the casting to gain experience and could not believe it when he learned that he was chosen.
Born in 1997, The Huy has made his personal mark, being loved and highly appreciated by the audience with a series of nearly 20 "recital by tenor The Huy" over the past 3 years.
The young man remembers taking a photo of the choir list with Huy Nguyen's name in the tenor column and sending it to his parents to show them. "No one in my family is in the arts, it's very hard, but every time I achieve something, no matter how small, my parents are happy and proud" - Huy was moved.
At the beginning of his study abroad, Huy felt depressed and did not want to connect with anyone. The environment was strange, there were many things to adapt to, and he was far from home and everything he had worked so hard to build...
But then the departure of a colleague made Huy startled: "Life is short. If you want something, you have to do it with determination. If you choose, you have to pursue it to the end." So Huy pulled himself together, studied hard, taught extra classes to earn money, and applied for castings at the places he wanted...
Huy is studying Classical Voice for 4 years and will continue to study Opera Performance at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music in Australia.
Huy said that when he was stuck, what kept him going was thinking about his parents. At the age of 6, Huy helped his mother photocopy. His father was a contractor in the countryside, the job was extremely hard, but he still saved money to study singing and dreamed of taking the entrance exam.
So every time he encounters difficulties, Huy will remember the money his father gave him for school, and his mother's unconditional support. Huy cannot let down his parents, and even more so, he cannot let down his own efforts.
"Many people succeed from a good starting point, everything goes smoothly. But Huy is grateful for the hardships that have forged the resilient The Huy he is today. Being able to sing, being loved by the audience, and having family support, that is so lucky!" - Huy smiled brightly.
However, the young tenor also has many concerns. Having been nurtured in the developing opera environment in Australia, Huy has more hope that the opera community in Vietnam will flourish in the future.
"As I grow older, Huy finds himself becoming more calm and mature, but also more worried. Huy doesn't want to lose the innocence in his soul. Always reminding himself of his pure passion is the motivation for Huy to keep going" - The Huy confided.
Perhaps thanks to that, every time we meet again, Huy has new steps to show off to the audience. And the journey to reach the dreams of this 9x tenor continues to be an inspiration for young people who are also following the "difficult path" like Huy. Because there is no miracle for dreams to come true, only passion and dedication to the end, then luck will come!
The Huy was engrossed in the recital night "To be sung is to be seen" in Ho Chi Minh City with pianist Le Pham My Dung
Before the two shows, Huy confessed that he was worried because the music program this time did not have any Vietnamese songs, but consisted entirely of famous opera excerpts from famous composers such as Mozart, Verdi, Donizetti & Cimarosa, Gounod & Lehár.
But encouraged by his teacher in Australia, Huy boldly organized To be sung is to be seen as a way to share his learning achievements with his beloved audience in his homeland.
