'Michelle Yeoh's success encourages Asian actors'

Michelle Yeoh - a Malaysian - won Best Actress at last year's Oscars and Golden Globes for her role in the multiverse adventure Everything Everywhere All at Once.

"It's really a very special journey and a very long journey. Congratulations to her and I consider it an encouragement for Asian actors to step out into the world ," Gong Li acknowledged.

Gong Li is the star of famous Chinese films.

Gong Li starred in popular Chinese films such as Red Sorghum (1988) and Farewell My Concubine (1993) before gaining wider recognition through Hollywood films such as Memoirs of a Geisha (2005). She returned to the red carpet at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival after a long absence.

“First, people really have to leave their homes and go abroad to see the world, and then go back to work as before,” added Gong Li, who has attended the Cannes Film Festival many times. She was a member of the Palme d’Or jury in 1997.
