Captain Ho Van Huu, Head of the Mass Mobilization Team of Ba Tang Border Post, is a typical example in this work. He went to every alley, knocked on every door to grasp the situation; went to the fields with the people to explain, propagate, and mobilize everyone to participate in literacy classes; made a list to encourage those who relapsed into illiteracy to participate in re-illiteracy courses. Regardless of day or night, rain or shine, and anywhere, any family…, if he got information that a student intended to drop out of school, he would go to them to confide and advise them to return to school.

Captain Ho Van Huu at the literacy class

He is a Van Kieu ethnic, born and raised in Mo O commune, Da Krong district, Quang Tri. In 2011, he entered the military school, after graduating, he was assigned to work in Thua Thien-Hue province. From 2020, he was transferred to work at Ba Tang Border Post, Huong Hoa district.

During his time working here, he was considered a quite energetic and active officer in the unit's activities, always performing well the duties of a soldier and doing illiteracy eradication work, participating in activities and movements to help people in the area, so the locals called him with the affectionate name of Teacher Huu.

For many years, every three evenings a week at the A Doi Do hamlet school, A Doi commune, the literacy class of the Ba Tang Border Post that he is in charge of "lights up" with students being mothers and sisters of different ages. In addition to the pens and notebooks they bring, each person has a flashlight attached to their head or a hand-held torch for walking. Sometimes, mothers and sisters have to carry their children on their backs to go to class and learn to read.

Teacher Huu had to choose teaching methods that were appropriate for each subject. In addition to teaching, he also integrated cultural and artistic activities combined with the dissemination of legal policies, abolishing backward customs, and bringing civilized lifestyles to the villagers. From there, he created excitement for mothers and sisters to study more diligently. Gradually, the villagers were able to read fluently, write fluently, do common calculations, and had many positive changes in their awareness and actions.

Captain Ho Van Huu has well implemented the motto of a border guard soldier: "The station is home, the border is homeland, and the people of all ethnic groups are our blood relatives."

Not only teaching illiteracy eradication, he has actively coordinated with schools, boarding teachers, and organizations in the commune to mobilize 55 school-age children to go to school and nearly 30 students of all levels who intended to give up to continue studying. In addition, he and local organizations gathered illiterates and directly taught classes, serving as homeroom teachers for 5 illiteracy eradication classes with more than 180 students.

Although the work is quite hard, with the efforts and determination of the elderly people to learn to read and write regardless of the night, rain or shine..., he feels very happy and joyful when standing on the podium.

In addition, Captain Ho Van Huu was also assigned by the Party Committee and the Command of Ba Tang Border Post to directly teach and help 2 adopted children of the post and 10 children in the program "Helping children go to school". Through the time of studying and training, the children have all achieved good and excellent academic performance; one child passed the university entrance exam. Among them, 2 students from A Doi Primary and Secondary School won first prize in the provincial Science and Technology competition, receiving the Vu A Dinh Award from the Central Executive Committee of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union in 2022.

As for the villagers, they are also very happy that the inferiority complex of not knowing how to read books, read newspapers or exchange work via social networks by phone as before has been gradually eliminated. Up to now, the illiteracy classes have been boldly participated in by mothers and sisters, who are excited to study. Many of them can read and write fluently, so everything is much more convenient. The mothers and sisters did not expect that joy would come to the whole village from here, when they have knowledge, know how to calculate as well as have more life skills. From there, they are bolder in behaving, communicating, and limiting being taken advantage of and deceived by bad people.

Opening literacy classes in ethnic minority areas is a very necessary and meaningful work. It not only helps people learn to read and write, but also opens up opportunities for people to learn, research, apply science and technology, economic models or apply them to production... Most importantly, it creates favorable conditions for the border guards to carry out advocacy work, propagate the Party's guidelines and policies, the State's policies and laws to get closer to the people.

Having been attached to Ba Tang Border Guard Station for more than 3 years, with the people of Ba Tang and A Doi communes, in addition to his position as the Head of the Mass Mobilization Team, Captain Ho Van Huu is also the Deputy Secretary of the Youth Union. He is always ready to join the unit's youth union members in helping people overcome and repair houses and civil works whenever there are natural disasters; maintain the activities of border self-management teams, landmarks, village security and order teams, organize clearing to clear the border view; coordinate the organization of the Mid-Autumn Festival for students, the "Green Sunday" program to clean up roads, areas of memorials to heroic martyrs in the area...

It can be said that Captain Ho Van Huu has well implemented the motto of a border guard soldier: "The station is home, the border is the homeland, the people of all ethnic groups are brothers and sisters", eating together, living together, working together, protecting the people, protecting the border. And he deserved to receive the noble award: Vu A Dinh Award presented by the Central Executive Committee of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union in 2022.
