“Steel in the Pen, Fire in the Heart”: Honoring True Journalists

On the evening of June 21, in Hanoi, a special art program to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Vietnam Revolutionary Press Day (June 21, 1925 - June 21, 2025) and the 19th National Press Awards Ceremony in 2024 took place solemnly, broadcast live on channels VTV1 (Vietnam Television), VOV1 and VOV2 (Voice of Vietnam).

With the theme “Steel in the Pen, Fire in the Heart”, the program honors the tireless contributions of true journalists in their journey with the country.

This year, from 1,970 entries, of which 1,913 were qualified, the National Press Awards Council selected 183 entries for the Final Round. After the process of evaluation, discussion and voting, 128 outstanding entries were awarded, including 13 A Prizes, 27 B Prizes, 49 C Prizes and 39 Encouragement Prizes.

The award-winning works are in many journalism genres such as: News, reflection articles, interviews; Editorials, Comments, Specials; Single photos, photo groups, photo reports; Documentaries, television reports; Reports, investigative reports, journalistic reports, notes... In particular, 2024 is the first time the National Press Awards has included two new genres: Multimedia Journalism and Creative Journalism, demonstrating the transformation of journalism in the digital age.

In particular, the A prize in the Multimedia Journalism category was awarded to the 5-part series “Darkness in the Warm Home” by the group of authors Dang Van Sinh, Tran Duy Khanh, Nguyen Thi Uyen Nhi - Thanh Nien Newspaper Journalists Association. In the Creative Journalism category, the A prize went to the interactive panorama supplement “ Dien Bien Phu Campaign” by the group of authors Ngo Viet Anh, Nguyen Thi Uyen, Nguyen Thi Hong Hanh, Tran Van Quyet, Nguyen Quang Huy, Le Thanh Bai, Nguyen Ngoc Toan - Nhan Dan Newspaper Journalists Association.

The works participating in this year's competition are highly appreciated for both content and form of expression, comprehensively reflecting the political , economic, cultural, social, defense, security, and foreign affairs life of the country in 2024. Many prominent topical topics are deeply and multi-dimensionally expressed such as: the process of streamlining the apparatus, reforming institutions and administrative procedures, digital transformation, developing a green economy, preventing natural disasters, overcoming the consequences of super typhoon Yagi, fighting against counterfeit and smuggled goods, illegal exploitation of resources, etc. In addition, many works realistically depict the images of ordinary people with noble deeds such as female teachers in mountainous areas, party cell secretaries in villages, young doctors in difficult areas, blind students with strong will, etc. spreading humanistic values, touching the emotions of the public.

According to the Jury, the highlight of this year's season is the elaborate investment in multimedia journalism products, the strong application of digital technology, aiming at developing multi-platform journalism, while still maintaining political, ideological and accurate values, and timeliness. The award-winning works not only demonstrate outstanding professional capacity but also demonstrate the spirit of dedication and constant innovation of the journalism team in the context of the rapid transformation of journalism.

The National Press Award is the most prestigious award of the national press, approved by the Government, and the Vietnam Journalists Association is the permanent organization. This is not only a recognition and honor for outstanding authors and works, but also a great source of encouragement, encouraging journalists to continue to contribute, innovate, and build a modern, professional, and humane Vietnamese revolutionary press. In particular, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Vietnam Revolutionary Press Day, the award has a deeper meaning, contributing to affirming the role, position, and irreplaceable contributions of generations of Vietnamese journalists in the revolutionary cause of the Party and the nation.
