According to Sky Sports, the English Football Association has reached an agreement with Thomas Tuchel, preparing to announce the successful appointment of the former Chelsea manager today, October 16th. The English newspaper reports that Tuchel's representatives have agreed to an 18-month contract to manage the Three Lions, starting on January 1st, 2025.
Coach Lee Carsley will lead the England team in two Nations League matches against Greece on November 14th and Ireland on November 17th, before handing over the reins to the German coach. Thomas Tuchel will become the third foreign coach to have managed the England national team, after Sven-Goran Eriksson (2001-2006) and Fabio Capello (2007-2012).
Thomas Tuchel will officially take over as England manager from January 2025.
The English Football Association was actually considering three options: Thomas Tuchel, Pep Guardiola, and Eddie Howe. However, the Spanish coach has a contract with Man City until summer 2025 and is not keen on a new job.
Manager Eddie Howe made a significant impact with Newcastle United, but he wasn't the right fit for the FA's selection criteria. In their job posting, the FA required applicants to have "significant experience in English football, achieving good results in the Premier League and/or top international competitions." Eddie Howe's best achievement with Newcastle was leading the team to the Champions League, but he never won a major trophy.
Thomas Tuchel meets all the FA's criteria. He has won 11 titles, including the Champions League, the UEFA Super Cup, the FIFA Club World Cup (Chelsea), two Ligue 1 titles, two French Super Cups, one French Cup, one French League Cup (PSG), plus the German Super Cup (Dortmund) and the Bundesliga (Bayern Munich). Most importantly, Coach Tuchel is currently a free agent and has not yet found a new club after leaving Bayern.
Under manager Southgate, England reached the World Cup semi-finals and the finals of EURO 2020 and 2024, but never won the tournament. The FA expects manager Tuchel to help England end their 56-year trophy drought.
This is no easy task, because in the World Cup and EURO tournaments, only one foreign coach has ever won a title: Otto Rehhagel. The German coach led Greece to victory in EURO 2004. The remaining 38 titles were all won by teams with native coaches.
