Slovakian media reported that Prime Minister Robert Fico was discharged from the hospital on May 31 to continue his recovery at his home in Bratislava, after a gun assassination that left him hospitalized for more than two weeks.
The hospital thanked Mr. Fico for “being a disciplined patient,” according to a social media post. The hospital had previously said Mr. Fico had expressed a desire to be cared for at home. Mr. Fico has been able to eat again, according to a representative of the Slovak government . It is not yet clear when he will return to duty.
Police have been deployed in front of Prime Minister Robert Fico's apartment in Bratislava to protect the prime minister as he receives treatment at home, Slovakian national broadcaster RTVS reported.
Juraj C., the 71-year-old gunman who shot Mr. Fico four times at close range on May 15, was immediately arrested and charged with attempted murder. He disagreed with the populist prime minister’s policies toward the European Union and his suspension of military aid to Ukraine.
The gunman also claimed his goal was to disable Mr Fico rather than kill him. Initially, the Slovak government said the attacker acted alone, but Interior Minister Matus Sutaj Estok later said investigators were looking into the possibility that the gunman had allies who encouraged him to attack Mr Fico.
