Entering the quarterfinals of the 2025 Asian Women's Futsal Championship on the morning of May 13, the Vietnamese women's futsal team faced a "big challenge" from Japan and encountered difficulties early in the match. After two rounds, the Vietnamese women's futsal team could not create a surprise and accepted to stop at a position in the 8 strongest teams in Asia.
Right from the 3rd minute, goalkeeper Thuy Linh had to go into the net to pick up the ball after Phuong Anh's unfortunate own goal. The ball came from a diagonal shot by a Japanese player and accidentally touched Phuong Anh's foot and changed direction, flying into the goal.
Just 6 minutes later, Japan almost had a second goal when Aki Ikeuchi stole the ball dangerously right in front of the Vietnamese goal. However, this goal was disallowed by the referee when VS technology (which operates similarly to VAR in 11-a-side football) came into play.
In the second half of the first half, coach Nguyen Dinh Hoang's students began to regain control of the game, played more proactively and created many dangerous situations towards the Japanese goal.
Towards the end of the half, goalkeeper Thuy Linh and her teammates continuously fought bravely to keep the net steady under great pressure from the opponent.
In the second half, the Vietnamese team tried to push up their formation to find an equalizer and make up for their teammates' mistakes. However, from an unsuccessful tackle by Van Anh, the Vietnamese defense was stretched, creating conditions for Ryo Egawa to easily finish, raising the score to 2-0 for Japan in the 23rd minute.
In the middle of the second half, the Vietnamese women's futsal team almost conceded a third goal, while the players began to show signs of overload and muscle strain.
In the second half of the match, coach Nguyen Dinh Hoang was forced to deploy the power-play tactic. Thanh Hang, Thanh Ngan and Thuy Trang took turns making shots with great effort, but still could not penetrate the opponent's net. At the end of the match, the Vietnamese women's futsal team suffered a 0-2 defeat to Japan.
The above result caused the Vietnamese women's futsal team to miss the opportunity to win a ticket to the first Women's Futsal World Cup.
Meanwhile, Japan secured the first spot in the semi-finals. Their opponent will be the winner between Chinese Taipei and Iran.
