A young woman in Hanoi said she accidentally saw a spa's fat-dissolving injection advertisement on Facebook, so she decided to go to this facility to experience it.

"Here, the spa staff advises that with just one 45-minute treatment, excess fat and hard fat will be "eliminated" at a cost of 30 million VND. After being anesthetized, the staff begins injecting fat-dissolving essence. After completing the treatment, the staff says that after 5-7 days, the fat will be eliminated through the excretory system, thereby slimming the body" - this woman said.

However, a week after the injection, her abdomen and thighs had many red, swollen, hard spots. The condition became more serious. After a few days, the pus pockets appeared more densely, causing pain... The patient then returned to the spa facility, but the facility had closed and could not be contacted.

Doctor Nguyen Tien Thanh, member of the Vietnam Dermatology Association, said this is one of the cases of complications after injecting fat-dissolving substances that he has recently examined and treated.

Through examination, the patient was diagnosed with an abscess after fat dissolving injection. The patient had to be treated with high doses of antibiotics, anti-inflammatory drugs, incision and drainage of the abscess...

After more than a week the ulcers dry, the inflammation reduces swelling. However, treatment of fat dissolving injection complications is difficult, patients are monitored long term.

Previously, Duc Giang General Hospital (Hanoi) also received a 40-year-old female patient who came for examination with many unusual lumps appearing on her cheeks, double chin, arms, abdomen, and signs of necrosis after 2 weeks of injecting fat-dissolving substances.

Three months before being admitted to the hospital, this woman heard from an acquaintance that she went to a spa to get fat-dissolving injections to lose weight. According to the consultant, just one injection course, without the need for surgery, will help her lose weight immediately.

Two months after the injection, hard lumps and pimples appeared all over the body, some of which oozed pus and blood, causing pain. The cosmetic facility prescribed antibiotics and painkillers, but the patient's condition worsened, so he went to the hospital to see a doctor.

According to doctors, there are 3 possible causes of inflammation after fat-dissolving injections: fat-dissolving injections of unknown origin. Currently, fat-dissolving injections have not been licensed by the Ministry of Health , so the drugs that cosmetic facilities inject into patients are illegal and unsafe.

Second, due to the injection technique not ensuring sterility. Third, due to incorrect injection technique leading to necrosis of surrounding tissues. Because if injected too close to the skin surface, the drug can cause ulcers in the skin at the injection site. If injected too deep, there is a risk of necrosis at the injection site and spreading to other areas of the body.
