Global standards for codes and barcodes help shape new technology solutions

Recently, the Asia Pacific Code and Barcode Forum 2025 (GS1 AP 25) opened at Vinpearl Nha Trang, Khanh Hoa. The forum is an important platform to unify actions, making global standards on codes, barcodes and product identification become an effective tool for Vietnam's digital transformation.

Attending the Forum were comrades: Le Xuan Dinh, Deputy Minister of Science and Technology; Major General Nguyen Ngoc Cuong, Director of the National Data Center, Vice President of the National Data Association; Mr. Nguyen Nam Hai, Chairman of the National Committee for Standards, Metrology and Quality, Leader of the Vietnam Barcode Organization (GS1); Mr. Nguyen Long Bien, Vice Chairman of the Khanh Hoa Provincial People's Committee; Mr. Bui Ba Chinh, Acting Director of the National Barcode Center, CEO of GS1 Vietnam.

Also attending the Forum were Mr. Renaud de Barbuat, President and CEO of GS1 Global; Ms. Maria Palazzolo, CEO of GS1 Australia, President of GS1 Asia Pacific ; leaders of the Department of Science and Technology of provinces and cities across the country; and GS1 delegates from countries in the Asia-Pacific region.

The Forum is an annual regional event, playing a leading role in the field of barcodes and traceability. In 2025, GS1 Vietnam will host the Forum, marking the 30th anniversary of Vietnam officially becoming a member of GS1. The Forum emphasizes the role of global standards for codes and barcodes in shaping new technology solutions, towards a sustainable and transparent digital economy for the Asia-Pacific region.

Within the framework of the Forum, seminars and meetings of senior management as well as experts of GS1 Vietnam focused on discussing key topics such as: GS1 Asia-Pacific Strategy, digitalization policy and digital trade. Leading experts from businesses and organizations across the bloc shared information and practical experience in applying GS1 standards and modern technology to business operations.

At the opening session, Deputy Minister of Science and Technology Le Xuan Dinh said: “In Vietnam, innovation and digital transformation are the central pillars in the national development strategy towards building a digital government, digital economy and digital society, placing people and businesses at the center, science and technology as the foundation and innovation as the driving force for development. In that process, the application of international standards, digital technology and global identification and traceability systems play a particularly important role. This is the foundation to ensure quality, transparency and trust to help businesses improve their competitiveness, towards a sustainable economic development."

Major General Nguyen Ngoc Cuong - Director of the National Data Center, Vice President of the National Data Association also emphasized: "Always encourage Vietnamese enterprises to apply GS1 international standards to have uniformity in identification and traceability to further accelerate the process of transparency of the digital economy, bringing strategic benefits to the Vietnamese socio-economy".

Representative of GS1 Vietnam is Mr. Nguyen Nam Hai, Chairman of the National Committee for Standards, Metrology and Quality, presenting the achievements of GS1 Vietnam in recent years. Accordingly, GS1 Vietnam has built a national product and goods traceability system connected with many ministries and branches; expanded the application of GS1 standards in many fields; and at the same time converted to apply 2D QR code standards and electronic invoices according to GS1 standards in line with global trends.

At the Forum, GS1 Global President and CEO Renaud de Barbuat presented his vision for 2030 with a focus on creating trust in data for everyone, everywhere, while emphasizing GS1’s fundamental role in ensuring data transparency and interoperability for the AI ​​era, and his commitment to accelerating value in core areas such as sustainability and supply chain security.

The success of the Forum is a solid premise for Vietnam to continue to promote its proactive and positive role, contributing to the common development of the international GS1 community, towards a safe, transparent and sustainable digital economy for the entire Asia-Pacific region.
