Ben Affleck and Matt Damon's 35-year friendship

Ben Affleck and Matt Damon grew up together in Boston, winning an Oscar for Best Screenplay for Good Will Hunting (released in 1997), in which they co-starred, before pursuing major careers in Hollywood on their own.

In November 2022, the two announced that they were forming a film production company together called Artists Equity, which has produced films such as Air , The Instigators , Small Things Like These , Unstoppable .

Sharing with Deadline , Matt Damon (54 years old) and Ben Affleck (52 years old) talked about the inspiration for their decision that appeared when they were both participating in the movie The Last Duel directed by Ridley Scott, released in theaters in 2021.

"We had a lot of that experience in The Last Duel . It had been a long time since Ben and I had written a book together, and I was watching Peter Jackson's documentary on The Beatles . It ended with a performance on the roof. The guys were playing music, and it was The Beatles. They were playing live, and you could see the joy they were having. They were so excited, and then Peter Jackson came in with a line that said, 'This is The Beatles' last live performance,'" Matt Damon recalled.

He added that he watched the documentary The Beatles: Get Back with his youngest daughter Stella and was moved by the thought of his own legacy.

"She turned around and looked at me and said, 'Daddy, why are you crying?' I was in tears because of the missed opportunity for these four great musicians who clearly loved each other. That was the driving force behind the creation of this company," Matt Damon affirmed.

Matt Damon is the chief content officer of the Los Angeles-based company, while Ben Affleck is the CEO and Damon's wife Luciana plays a key role. One of their next projects is a film with Netflix called RIP , in which Damon and Affleck play two undercover cops.

In the same interview with Deadline , Ben Affleck explained that he and Damon wanted to spend more time working together.

"The real root of this company is Matt and I realized that our lives are very much defined by the people we spend time with every day. In The Last Duel , we agreed that we should do more things together. Life is more interesting and rewarding when we spend time together and do things together," Affleck confirmed.

Matt Damon previously spoke to Entertainment Tonight about his long-standing friendship and partnership with Ben Affleck: "I've been friends with Ben for 35 years and we've grown up together. We both love acting and filmmaking. I think we nurtured that passion during those really important years that shaped who we are. And that's what has bonded us to this day."
