Accordingly, from the beginning of the day until 3:30 a.m. on May 22, the Emergency Department of Cho Ray Hospital (Ho Chi Minh City) coordinated with local medical staff to dispatch 2 ambulances to Tan Son Nhat Airport, quickly receiving 9 victims of the fire at the Song Doc oil rig (Ca Mau) and urgently taking them to Cho Ray Hospital for emergency treatment.

Among the 9 victims, patient TAT was treated with a back brace. After consultation with the Department of Neurosurgery, the patient was conscious and stable and was discharged. The second victim was CMP, admitted with a fractured right heel bone and was monitored for a torn left knee ligament. After consultation, the patient was prescribed a plaster cast and transferred to the Department of Orthopedics for further monitoring.
Dr. Ngo Duc Hiep, Head of the Department of Burns and Plastic Surgery at Cho Ray Hospital, said that the Department received the remaining 7 patients. Among the 7 patients in the Department of Burns and Plastic Surgery, there was one case with 38% second-third degree burns. After endoscopy, the patient was diagnosed with respiratory edema. The treatment team performed endotracheal intubation, put the patient on a ventilator and transferred him to the intensive care unit.

In addition, there were 2 patients who also suffered quite severe burns. Dr. Ngo Duc Hiep said that the process of transporting the victims from Tan Son Nhat airport to the hospital only took more than 10 minutes. The quick transport helped the patients to be treated early, minimizing serious sequelae later.
“In most dry thermal burn accidents (such as oil burns), the most important first aid issue is to reduce the temperature, by using clean water, gauze or clean clothes to cover the wound. Along with that is the issue of fluid replacement and hydration for the patient. Finally, the patient must be quickly transported to a specialized emergency facility. In addition, patients also need to know the skills to escape and save themselves from a fire, especially to avoid respiratory burns,” Dr. Ngo Duc Hiep shared more.
Previously, a fire broke out on the Song Doc drilling rig, offshore of Ca Mau province, around the early afternoon of May 21.
Emergency services were activated as soon as the fire was detected. Some workers used fire escape ropes from upper floors, while others moved down the fire escape to safety. The fire was extinguished after about 30 minutes.
