Love for the sea and islands through the Composition Contest about the sea, islands and the Vietnam Coast Guard

The "Literary and Artistic Composition Contest on the Sea, Islands and the Vietnam Coast Guard" (referred to as the Contest) organized by the Vietnam Coast Guard General Staff in coordination with the People's Committee of Nat Son Commune, Phu Tho Province at 10 primary and secondary schools in the area helped students feel the love for the sea, islands of their homeland and the Coast Guard soldiers through an innocent and pure perspective.

We went to Nat Son to coordinate the organization of the Contest, where the Muong highlands are covered with the green of the mountains, terraced fields and the swaying sound of gongs. Surprisingly, through each stroke of the drawing, the stories that the students brought to the Contest were all innocent, shining with intense love, towards the places where there are waves and soldiers who are performing their duties day and night offshore.

The contest with the theme "Pride of the sea and islands of the homeland" was launched with the following contents: Praising the beauty of Vietnam's sea and islands, the qualities of "Uncle Ho's soldiers - Coast Guard soldiers" in performing the tasks of protecting, rescuing, helping fishermen and fighting to protect sovereignty , maintaining security, order and safety in the seas and islands of the Fatherland. The contest is part of a series of activities of the mass mobilization program "Coast Guard with ethnic and religious compatriots" in Nat Son commune, jointly organized by the Coast Guard General Staff.

During the 20 days of the Contest, we witnessed beautiful moments. From materials such as roasted rice, eggshells, dry leaves, shredded paper, and crayons, the small hands of Muong, Tay, and Dao ethnic students created colorful paintings; with many touching poems and short stories, the students conveyed meaningful messages of love for the sea, islands of their homeland, and the soldiers of the Vietnam Coast Guard.

In just a short period of time, the Organizing Committee of the Contest received nearly 1,000 works with diverse colors, materials, ideas and rich content. Through the preliminary round, 50 literary works and 50 paintings of high quality were selected to participate in the final round.

It was touching that many children had never been to the sea, which further affirmed the positive meaning that the Contest had brought. Bui Thi Thanh Thuy, Class 8A, Son Thuy Primary and Secondary School, innocently shared: I learned about the sea when watching TV and through my mother's stories. My mother said the sea was very beautiful, the water was clear and blue, but I had never been to the sea. Today, we learned about it from the Coast Guard, I really want to walk on the long and beautiful beaches of my homeland.

We asked Nguyen Viet Trinh, Class 9A2, Thuong Bi Primary and Secondary School: “When you draw about the sea and islands, what do you think about?”. She answered very honestly and adorably: “I think about the soldiers, the Vietnamese Coast Guard soldiers who are holding guns to guard the sea and sky. They work very hard, so I want to draw a beautiful picture to give to them.”

With their simplicity and rusticity, the students in the mountainous region love the sea in their own way. Many good poems about marine soldiers composed by them have made a strong impression at the Contest. Student Bui Thi Kim Tien, Class 7B, B Du Sang Primary and Secondary School wrote the poem “The Fatherland protects the sea” with verses full of student spirit: “The red flag flutters / Deeply loves my country / The silent heroes / Watching the sleep of the sea...."

Many works on the theme of the Vietnam Coast Guard were chosen by students to compose.

When looking at the gentle and affectionate mountain students participating in the Contest with eagerness and enthusiasm, we realized that each work is a story told through drawings and verses. They expressed the beauty of the sea and the image of the Vietnamese Coast Guard with gratitude and admiration. Although many of them have never set foot on the sea, they have felt the hardships and silent sacrifices of the seamen at the forefront of the waves and winds. That makes us see more clearly our responsibility in propaganda work so that the most beautiful images of Vietnam's sea, islands and sea soldiers can be spread widely, creating more positive effects.

Talking to us, Ms. Bui Thi Huong, Literature Teacher at B Du Sang Primary and Secondary School, emotionally said: Through accompanying and guiding the students to participate in the Contest, I realized that the students are more confident, bolder and have a deeper understanding of the sovereignty of the sea and islands and the Vietnam Coast Guard. The content of the Contest contributes usefully to the lectures of teachers in the classroom in educating students about love for the sea and islands, about gratitude for the Vietnam Coast Guard soldiers who are patrolling day and night, enforcing the law, firmly protecting the sacred sovereignty of the sea and islands of the Fatherland.

In summary of the Competition, for each category of painting and literature, the Organizing Committee awarded 1 A prize, 2 B prizes, 3 C prizes and 10 Encouragement prizes. The best works were honored with radiant joy, emotion and pride. More meaningfully, the Competition overcame geographical distance to connect a love for forests and seas in the mountainous landscape; at the same time, lit the fire of love for the sea and islands in the pure souls of the students here. Each painting, each verse of the students is a deep gratitude to the marine soldiers, and at the same time an affirmation of the sacred sovereignty of the Fatherland.

Immediately after the end of the Contest, 32 outstanding works were neatly and solemnly arranged in the school's reading room, creating a miniature exhibition space with educational and emotional art.

In the middle of that distant mountainous area, the children's shouts still echoed in our ears: "We love the Vietnam Coast Guard", "Proud of our homeland's sea and islands".
