The land where Moscow plans to build a new embassy in Canberra
On June 26, the Australian High Court temporarily ordered Russia to leave the land where Moscow plans to build a new embassy in Canberra until the case goes to court for more detailed legal arguments.
The Russian Embassy said it had "no comment" on the Australian court's decision.
Earlier, on June 23, an Australian Government spokesman said that Russia had filed a lawsuit in the Australian High Court over the government's decision to pass a law terminating the lease of land in Canberra to prevent Moscow from building a new embassy near the Australian Parliament building.
In 2022, the National Capital Authority of Australia (NCA) decided to revoke the lease to Russia of a plot of land in the suburb of Yarralumla, 500m from the Australian Parliament House.
However, at the end of May 2023, the Federal Court of Australia ruled that this move was invalid and of no effect, prohibiting the Australian Government from preventing the Russian Government from using the land.
At the time, the Russian Embassy in Australia described the decision to terminate the land lease as “an unprecedented and very unfriendly move”.
