Vietnam and Brazil officially established diplomatic relations on May 8, 1989, opening a period of long-term and stable cooperation for bilateral relations.

Since the establishment of diplomatic relations, the trust and close cooperation between the two countries have been marked by high-level visits, fruitful dialogues and enhanced cooperation in areas such as politics , culture, education and technology. These exchanges have deepened mutual understanding and fostered closer ties between the governments and peoples of the two countries.
Vietnam and Brazil upgraded their relationship to Comprehensive Partnership during the official visit to Brazil by General Secretary Nong Duc Manh (2007).
The two countries upgraded their relationship to a Strategic Partnership (2024) during Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh's working visit to attend the G20 Summit and conduct a number of bilateral activities in Brazil at the invitation of Brazilian President, G20 Chair 2024, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, from November 16 to 19, 2024.
