On November 4, US President Donald Trump announced the re-nomination of Mr. Jared Isaacman for the position of Director of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), replacing Mr. Sean Duffy, Acting Director of NASA.
Mr. Isaacman is a private astronaut and businessman, known as a close ally of billionaire Elon Musk, founder of SpaceX corporation.
Isaacman's initial nomination five months ago was withdrawn due to public disagreements between President Donald Trump and billionaire Elon Musk.
Sharing on social media, President Donald Trump emphasized that Jared Isaacman's endless passion for space, extensive experience as an astronaut, and a desire to expand the boundaries of exploration make him the ideal person to lead NASA into a new era of breakthroughs.
By regulation, this personnel nomination will await approval from the Senate, where Mr. Trump's Republican Party holds the majority.
Isaacman, founder and CEO of Shift4 Payments, is the commander and primary sponsor of the world's first private crewed mission to orbit Earth in 2021. The Inspiration4 mission lasted three days with four civilian astronauts on board SpaceX.
In September 2024, Isaacman went on to fund and command the Polaris Dawn mission, which launched another four-person private astronaut team into orbit. During this mission, Isaacman and a SpaceX engineer performed the first private crewed spacewalk in history.
Speaking on the X platform hours before President Trump announced his selection, Isaacman said he would maintain a balance between SpaceX's development direction and the White House's, while focusing on promoting NASA's multi-billion-dollar strategy to return American astronauts to the Moon by 2027.
He also expressed his support for the Artemis lunar exploration program in an effort to bring American astronauts back to the Moon - a place humans have not set foot on since the last Apollo mission in 1972.
In addition, the businessman also said he will shift investment to challenging fields such as nuclear power propulsion, while maximizing the remaining life cycle of the International Space Station (ISS) - the foundation for building an orbital economy , attracting the participation of private enterprises in space development and exploitation./.
