US President Donald Trump said on October 27 that he hopes to add a trade deal with China to a series of agreements he reached during his trip to Asia this week.
Just before Air Force One landed in Tokyo to continue his Asia tour, Mr. Trump told reporters that he thought the two countries would reach a trade deal.
Negotiators from the world’s two top economies outlined a framework on October 26 for a deal that would see the United States suspend tariff hikes and China ease controls on rare earth exports, US officials said.
But neither side expects a breakthrough that would restore trade conditions to pre-Trump levels. Talks leading up to the meeting have focused on resolving differences and making modest improvements ahead of Trump’s planned state visit to China early next year.
On his longest foreign trip since taking office in January 2025, Trump announced deals with four Southeast Asian countries during his first stop in Malaysia. He flew to Tokyo on October 27 for an official visit to Japan. New Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi hopes to continue impressing Trump with pledges to buy American pickup trucks, soybeans and natural gas during their summit on October 28. Ms. Takaichi, who became Japan's first female prime minister last week, told Mr. Trump in a phone call on October 24 that strengthening the two countries' alliance was her "top priority."
Mr. Trump is scheduled to leave on October 29 for Gyeongju, South Korea, where he will hold talks with President Lee Jae Myung.
Trump is expected to end his Asia trip with a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the Asia- Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in South Korea on October 30. The meeting comes after Washington and Beijing raised tariffs on each other’s exports and warned they would halt trade related to important minerals and technology.
