The New York Times, citing a copy of the decision, said the Trump administration had revoked the decision to extend the anti-deportation protection that the previous administration had granted to more than 600,000 Venezuelans living in the United States.

According to the New York Times, US Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem has rescinded the move by the administration of former President Joe Biden to allow Venezuelans in the US to "benefit" from the decision to resist deportation for an additional 18 months and be granted work permits under the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) program.

Republican President Donald Trump took office on January 20 with a pledge to crack down on illegal immigration and humanitarian programs that he said exceeded the purposes of US law.

Mr. Trump tried to end most TPS work permits during his first term, but was blocked by federal courts.

TPS is for citizens of countries that have experienced natural disasters, armed conflicts or other extraordinary events. Former Democratic President Joe Biden significantly expanded the program and now has more than 1 million people from 17 countries in the program.

A little more than a week before Mr. Trump took office, Biden’s Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas issued an order extending deportation protections for Venezuelans. He also extended TPS for people from El Salvador, Ukraine and Sudan.

In a related development, Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yvan Gil on January 28 called US Secretary of State Marco Rubio an enemy of Caracas and accused Mr. Rubio of trying to strip Venezuela of its sovereignty over the disputed territory with Guyana.

On Telegram, Foreign Minister Gil stated: "Marco Rubio, an enemy of our country, as Secretary of State has continued to demonstrate an unhealthy obsession with harming Venezuela. Now he is trying to support the delusions of the Government of Guyana, which seeks to deprive us of our long-held rights."

Foreign Minister Yvan Gil said the Guyana government must sit down at the negotiating table with Venezuela to maintain peace in the region.

The US State Department said on January 27, Secretary of State Rubio had talks with Guyana President Irfaan Ali, in which he expressed strong support for Guyana's territorial integrity.

The oil and mineral-rich Essequibo region has long been a subject of dispute between Venezuela and Guyana. Venezuela became independent from Spain in 1845, with the Essequibo recognized as part of its territory.

However, in 1899, the United Kingdom filed and won a case recognizing Essequibo as part of then-British Guyana. Guyana cited the 1899 ruling in a 2018 case at the International Court of Justice against Venezuela to reaffirm its claim to the disputed territory.
