On July 24, the National Assembly's Supervisory Delegation led by Vice Chairman of the National Assembly Le Minh Hoan had a working session with the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee on the implementation of policies and laws on environmental protection since the Law on Environmental Protection 2020 took effect.
Reporting to the working group, the leader of the Department of Natural Resources and Environment said that Ho Chi Minh City is facing great pressure in collecting, treating and recycling waste. On average, the city generates about 14,000 tons of solid waste every day, of which nearly 99% is collected. However, about 60% of the waste is still treated by landfill, the rate of burning, recycling and composting is still limited.
The city currently has 4 centralized waste treatment areas with a total area of over 1,670 hectares, including 3 main areas: Dong Thanh (Hoc Mon), Go Cat (Binh Tan) and Da Phuoc (Binh Chanh). In addition, the city is also planning 3 new waste treatment areas with a scale of about 750 hectares in Cu Chi and Can Gio. These areas are expected to apply modern incineration technology, gradually reducing dependence on traditional landfills.

One of the significant difficulties today is that the progress of solid waste classification at source is still slow, mainly due to the lack of synchronous collection infrastructure, fragmented treatment technology and lack of connection. Ho Chi Minh City is building a new project to restart the waste classification program at source by integrating technological solutions and improving the collection and transportation model.
The City People's Committee leaders also proposed that the Central Government should soon allocate resources to improve the wastewater treatment system, complete the environmental database, and issue staffing standards for the environmental sector at the commune and ward levels. At the same time, there should be a mechanism to support the conversion of vehicles using clean energy, and the treatment of new waste such as electric vehicle batteries, electronic devices, and industrial waste generated from modern urban areas.
Speaking at the meeting, Vice Chairman of the National Assembly Le Minh Hoan acknowledged Ho Chi Minh City's efforts to transform its environmental management thinking, and suggested that the city continue administrative reform, strongly apply digital transformation and ecological technology in pollution treatment and develop a circular economic model.
“Not only a management task, environmental protection must become a driving force for innovation in the growth model,” the Vice Chairman of the National Assembly emphasized.

Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee Nguyen Van Duoc said that the city is committed to synchronously implementing solutions from institutions, resources to implementation organization, aiming to make the environment one of the pillars of sustainable development. In particular, technology and innovation are important foundations to help improve efficiency and minimize the impact on the urban environment in the long term.
