On the occasion of World Cities Day (October 31), the United Nations Educational , Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) officially announced the list of 58 cities inscribed in the UNESCO Creative Cities Network this year.
In this list, Ho Chi Minh City is honored to become the first Creative City in the field of cinema in Vietnam and Southeast Asia.
Thus, to date, Vietnam has 4 cities that are members of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network, including Hanoi (design field, 2019), Hoi An (crafts and folk arts field, 2023), Da Lat ( music field, 2023) and Ho Chi Minh City (cinema field).

Speaking at the event, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Ngo Le Van emphasized that Ho Chi Minh City's recognition as a member of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network is a new success in the process of implementing the Party and State's policies and goals on international integration in the new context.
The Deputy Minister expressed his belief that in the process of participating in the UNESCO Creative Cities Network, Ho Chi Minh City will contribute to strongly promoting the talent and creative identity of Vietnamese people.
Ambassador Nguyen Thi Van Anh, Head of the Permanent Delegation of Vietnam to UNESCO, said that the recognition of Ho Chi Minh City as a member of the Creative Cities Network after a very serious application review process shows the international recognition of the city's potential and commitment to becoming a place connecting Vietnamese cinema with international cinema, contributing effectively and responsibly to the common development of regional cinema, and working with world cinema to further promote the value of cinema for humanity.
Joining the Creative Cities Network will help Ho Chi Minh City have more opportunities to exchange ideas, knowledge and experience with other creative cities around the world, and work with other creative cities to implement international cooperation projects in the field of cinema, jointly promote the creative potential of the community, expand access to culture, thereby contributing to promoting the development of the cultural industry with the goal of contributing 7.2% to the total product in the area (GRDP) by 2030.
The Creative Cities Network, established by UNESCO in 2004, is a global network that promotes cooperation among cities that consider creativity as a strategic element of sustainable development in economic, social, cultural and environmental aspects.
The Network currently includes 408 cities from over 100 countries, representing eight creative fields: Crafts and folk arts, media arts, design, cinema, gastronomy, literature, music and architecture.
The Creative Cities Network plays a pioneering role in contributing to the realization of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, aiming to build humane, inclusive and creative cities, where culture becomes the foundation for prosperity and social cohesion.
