Vietnamese celebrities shine in the "sky" of world culture

Affirming international appreciation

This event is the result of cooperation between Hung Yen province, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and international organizations. Nominations must meet the criteria set by UNESCO, in line with the organization's ideals and missions in the fields of education, culture, science and information and communication; and contribute to promoting peace , cultural dialogue and mutual understanding among peoples. Nominated events or personalities must also have wide influence and be known both domestically and internationally.

Ambassador Nguyen Thi Van Anh, Head of the Permanent Delegation of Vietnam to UNESCO, emphasized that this is a great event and an honor not only for Hung Yen province but also for Vietnam. UNESCO's approval of the Resolution to honor and join in celebrating the 300th anniversary of the birth of Cultural Celebrity Le Quy Don has affirmed the international appreciation for the scientific, cultural and educational values of Vietnam, and of Le Quy Don personally; contributing to promoting and introducing the cultural history of Vietnam and Hung Yen province. At the same time, implementing the policy of strongly and comprehensively developing the culture and people of Hung Yen towards truth - goodness - beauty; taking people as the center of development policy according to the Resolution of the 1st Hung Yen Provincial Party Congress, term 2025-2030.

Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Thi Thu Phuong, Director of the Vietnam Institute of Culture, Arts, Sports and Tourism (Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism) affirmed: Over the past 300 years, the talent and stature of Cultural Celebrity Le Quy Don have been affirmed and received the attention of domestic and foreign scientists, showing the need to introduce and spread more widely the Le Quy Don heritage to the world. UNESCO's honoring of Celebrity Le Quy Don not only has symbolic meaning, but is also a worthy recognition of the contributions of Vietnamese culture and intelligence to the treasure of human knowledge.

VHO - On October 31, the 43rd session of the General Assembly of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) held in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, passed a resolution to honor and join in celebrating the 300th anniversary of the birth of cultural celebrity Le Quy Don.

A shining "star" in the "sky" of Vietnamese culture

The famous Le Quy Don was born on August 2, 1726, and died on June 11, 1784, in Dien Ha village, Dien Ha district, Son Nam town (now Le Quy Don commune, Hung Yen province). He was the eldest son of Doctor Le Phu Thu (later changed to Le Trong Thu) - who held the position of Minister of Justice. His mother was the daughter of a doctor who had held many official positions. Since childhood, Le Quy Don was famous for being a studious, intelligent prodigy with a super memory. At the age of 2, he could read the words "existence" and "non-existence"; at the age of 5, he could read many articles in the Book of Poetry; at the age of 10, he studied history, memorizing 80 to 90 chapters every day and studied the Book of Changes in terms of the Cuong Hinh and Do Thuyet sections; at the age of 14, he had read all of the Five Classics, the Four Books, History Stories and the Philosophers . In particular, he could write 10 poems without thinking and without needing to write a draft.

At the age of 14, Le Quy Don followed his father to the capital Thang Long to study with the teacher, Doctor Le Huu Kieu. Thanks to his profound intelligence, at the age of 17, Le Quy Don passed the Huong exam with the highest rank. At the age of 27, he passed the Hoi exam, then passed the Dinh Nguyen Bang Nhan exam (because this exam did not select the Trang Nguyen).

After passing the exams, Le Quy Don was appointed as an official and held many important positions in the Le-Trinh dynasty such as: Han Lam Thua Chi, Toan Tu Quoc Su Quan (1754); Han Lam Vien Thi Lenh (1757); Doc Dong of Kinh Bac (1764); Thi Thu concurrently Tu Nghiep Quoc Tu Giam (1767); Tan Ly Quan Vu (1768); Thi Pho Do Ngu Su, Huu Thi Lang of the Ministry of Public Works (1769); Boi Tung (1773); Lai Bo Ta Thi Lang concurrently Tong Tai Quoc Su Quan (1775), Hiep Tran Tham Quan Co Tran Phu Thuan Hoa (1776); Hiep Tran Nghe An (1783); Thuong Thu of the Ministry of Public Works (1784)...

Le Quy Don was famous for being an honest, upright, talented and knowledgeable mandarin. During his career as a mandarin, Le Quy Don had many events that greatly influenced his writing and literary career. In 1756 and 1772, he was sent to investigate the suffering of the people and the corruption and bribery of mandarins in Son Nam, Lang Son.

During his diplomatic mission to China (1760-1762), Le Quy Don met with envoys, interacted with many famous intellectuals, discussed with them issues of History, Philosophy... His extensive knowledge was greatly admired by scholars. He had the opportunity to read many books, including Western books on world geography, linguistics, hydrology...

Thanks to the process of traveling a lot, seeing a lot, hearing a lot, knowing a lot of worldly affairs, Le Quy Don's knowledge was very rich. During his lifetime, the scholar Le Quy Don was known as "the wisdom bag of the era". He was praised by people: "Thien ha vo tri van Bang Don", meaning that everyone in the world who does not understand anything, wants to ask, meets Bang Nhan Le Quy Don. That saying speaks to the stature of the genius scholar of Dai Viet in the feudal period. A love of knowledge, a love of collecting, and a super memory... those are the factors that helped him become a famous person of Vietnam. He made contributions in many fields, such as: Philosophy, history, agronomy, astronomy... Each of his contributions brought historical, cultural, educational and humanistic values to all generations.

With his intelligence and profound knowledge, Le Quy Don left to posterity about 40 books covering most of the contemporary knowledge, such as: History, geography, poetry, many research works, interpretations, annotations, lectures on classics, ancient books and many Nom poems. His famous works are considered encyclopedias in many fields.

Some typical works can be mentioned: Regarding literature, there is the collection Toan Viet Thi Luc ; the very famous collection of Que Duong Thi Tap poems. Regarding history, there are Dai Viet Thong Su, Phu Bien Tap Luc, Kien Van Tap Luc, Bac Su Thong Luc . Regarding philosophy, there are Thu Kinh Dien Nghia, Dich Kinh Phu Thuyet, Xuan Thu Luoc Luan, Quan Thu Khao Bien .
