Gia Lai: Activating the disaster prevention and control system to respond to storm Kalmaegi

(Chinhphu.vn) - On November 4, the People's Committee of Gia Lai province assigned the Department of Agriculture and Environment to activate the natural disaster prevention and control information system and deploy measures to ensure the safety of lakes and dams, in the spirit of "raising the response level one level higher than the forecast".

Accordingly, the Department of Agriculture and Environment is responsible for activating response scenarios on the provincial disaster prevention and control information system software for 58 communes and wards in the eastern region of the province.

Specifically, the scenario to respond to level 5 storms was activated for 16 coastal communes and wards, including: Hoai Nhon Bac, Hoai Nhon, Hoai Nhon Dong, Tam Quan, Phu My Bac, Phu My Dong, An Luong, De Gi, Cat Tien, Ngo May, Tuy Phuoc, Tuy Phuoc Dong, Quy Nhon Dong, Quy Nhon, Quy Nhon Nam and Nhon Chau commune. The scenario to respond to level 4 storms was activated for the remaining 42 communes and wards in the eastern part of the province.

Activation time starts from 3:00 p.m. on November 4, complete evacuation according to scenarios before 12:00 p.m. on November 6.

The People's Committees of 58 related communes and wards are required to operate the system smoothly, promptly report on the evacuation situation, mobilize forces, vehicles, food and handle emergency situations if any; at the same time, count the damage, report to the department for synthesis and advise the Provincial People's Committee for direction.

Along with that, the Provincial People's Committee requested the People's Committees of communes and wards with lakes and dams; Binh Dinh Irrigation Works Exploitation Company Limited; Gia Lai Irrigation Works Exploitation Company Limited; owners of lakes and hydroelectric dams in the province to proactively deploy disaster response plans for the works, operate and regulate to ensure the safety of dams and downstream areas. Units must regularly report the operation situation and hydrometeorological monitoring data to the Irrigation Sub-Department (Department of Agriculture and Environment) for timely monitoring and direction.

Currently, the province has 4,476 vessels operating inshore, anchored at ports and 1,301 vessels operating at sea. Standing Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Tuan Thanh requested coastal localities to regularly inform and guide fishermen to move their vessels to safe anchorage locations.

For agricultural production and aquaculture, localities need to mobilize armed forces and youth union members to support people in urgently harvesting crops, reinforcing and moving boats and aquaculture cages to safe places, in order to minimize damage when storms make landfall.
