Responding to Storm No. 13: Gia Lai plans to evacuate more than 350,000 people

GIA LAI On the afternoon of November 5, the People's Committee of Gia Lai province held a working conference with the Commander of Military Region 5 on prevention and response to storm No. 13 (Kalmaegi).

According to the report of the Gia Lai Provincial Military Command, as of the morning of November 5, the entire province had evacuated 268 households with 997 people in areas at risk of landslides, deep flooding and flash floods. It is expected that by noon on November 6, localities will continue to organize the evacuation of an additional 36,100 households and nearly 159,000 people as planned, ensuring absolute safety for people in the storm-affected areas.

At the same time, the work of ensuring safety for fishermen and boats has been vigorously implemented. By this morning, 5,760 boats with more than 40,000 fishermen had been guided to safe anchorage. In addition, 2,425 aquaculture cages were also inspected and reinforced. The Border Guard continued to coordinate with local authorities, regularly informing 575 boats still operating offshore to move away from dangerous areas.

Mr. Pham Anh Tuan, Chairman of Gia Lai Provincial People's Committee, said that the work of evacuating people is being carried out urgently and seriously. It is expected that by tonight (November 5), all households in the dangerous areas will be evacuated. The relocation is carefully calculated, based on the characteristics of each area and the history of flooding to develop a specific plan.

Mr. Tuan noted that the storm is likely to make landfall at night, so localities must resolutely evacuate households that deliberately stay in dangerous areas. In particular, the western region of the province is at risk of heavy rain after the storm makes landfall, the province has activated the "level 4 scenario" and mobilized two Vice Chairmen of the Provincial People's Committee to directly command.

Regarding dam safety, the Chairman of Gia Lai Provincial People's Committee requested units to ensure water storage for production and proactively release water, absolutely not being subjective. "This storm is very strong, there are many unpredictable situations, so absolutely not being subjective," Mr. Tuan emphasized.

Mr. Tuan also said that the locality will support the displaced people: 50,000 VND/person/day for households that have to relocate and 20,000 VND/person/day for households that receive them. The relocated people will be guaranteed adequate food and drink until they are safe. It is expected that the whole province will relocate more than 100,000 households with about 350,000 people.

Lieutenant General Le Ngoc Hai, Commander of Military Region 5, requested the army, police, border guards and local militia forces to effectively promote the "4 on-the-spot" motto.

“Absolutely do not let the water rise before moving. Units must stay close to the base, mobilize local forces to support the people. In particular, prioritize the elderly and children to evacuate early. Border guards need to proactively arrange safe anchorages to ensure the safety of fishermen's lives and property,” Lieutenant General Le Ngoc Hai emphasized.
