Coming to Quang Nam, your journey of experience and discovery will be more complete if you have the opportunity to visit Ban Thach mat village. This is one of the oldest traditional craft villages in the locality, with a unique way of making mats, sophisticated patterns created from sedge and jute fibers.

Ban Thach sedge mat village is located in Dong Binh village, Duy Vinh commune, Duy Xuyen district, Quang Nam province, isolated from the outside world like an oasis suspended between 3 rivers (Thu Bon river, Ly Ly river and Truong Giang river).

The special feature of Ban Thach village mat products is that the sophisticated patterns are created from dyed sedge and jute fibers, not printed patterns on the mat.

The raw materials for making mats are sedge and jute. The sedge is split into small fibers and dried under the hot sun for about 4-5 days. Next is the dyeing process. To make the mats beautiful and not fade, people have to dip each small bunch into the pot of cooked colored water. Then continue to dry under the sun.

The most important step is weaving the mat. The process of weaving mats requires two people, one person shuttles and threads the thread and the other person pulls the loom.

The woven mat will be cut into squares and fixed on all four sides to prevent unraveling. After more than 2 hours, a mat is completed and sold for 100,000 VND/product.

In addition to weaving mats, Ban Thach people also make other sedge products such as handbags, sandals, bracelets... and open a sedge weaving experience service for domestic and foreign tourists.
