Trust will bring high income
In 2020, Ms. Ngan and her husband decided to go to Tra Vinh province (old) - famous for its specialty wax coconut, to buy seedlings and learn farming techniques. At that time, she bought 200 seedlings for 800,000 VND/tree, then divided them into 2 trial plantings on 2 hectares of her family's garden land. "At first, due to lack of farming experience, many coconuts were damaged and the trees grew slowly. At that time, I was very discouraged because each bunch of coconuts only had a few standard wax fruits, but thinking about the effort and the desire to create a specialty for my hometown, I was determined to pursue it. Because if I gave up, my family's investment capital of 200 million VND would be lost," Ms. Ngan shared.
After several years of perseverance and experience accumulation, in 2023, on average, each bunch of 10 coconuts will have 5-7 quality wax coconuts. Realizing the potential, Ms. Ngan expanded the model area to nearly 12 hectares, creating an attractive agricultural eco-tourism area by combining the planting of oranges, red-fleshed jackfruit, digging ponds to raise fish...
“I currently sell wax coconuts in two forms: liquid wax for about 80,000 VND/fruit, solid wax for 100,000-120,000 VND/fruit. I believe this crop will bring high income to my family and become a new local specialty,” Ms. Ngan hopes.
Products can be positioned as local brands
In August 2024, the Women's Union of Dai Thanh Commune (old) officially launched the model "Family services, farm economy , family farms associated with community tourism", with Ms. Nguyen Thi Ngan as the model leader, gathering 10 members who are women from Son Phu Hamlet. Together, they grow, care for, and sell wax coconuts, organize garden experience activities, process and introduce delicious coconut dishes right in the garden. Ms. Nguyen Thi My Tien, a member of the model, shared: "Since joining the model, I have not only sold wax coconuts but also learned how to do tourism and sales. With more income, my family's life has become more and more stable, more confident in life".
The wax coconut garden associated with community eco-tourism named Nguyen Son with a scale of nearly 12 hectares, is opening up a cool, peaceful green space, imbued with the identity of the river region, attracting many groups of visitors, especially on weekends. "I used to hope to bring tourists to my hometown garden so they can enjoy wax coconut and the garden atmosphere. Now, that wish is gradually coming true" - Mr. Nguyen Van Son, Ms. Ngan's husband, expressed.
Ms. Le Thuy Huyen, Vice President of the Women's Union of Dai Thanh Ward, commented: "Wax coconut is a crop with high economic value, and at the same time, it is a product that can position the local brand. We expect this to be one of the key products, contributing to promoting the development of agriculture combined with eco-tourism of Can Tho City in the future."
