Coffee prices extended their rally this week on Wednesday, with Arabica hitting a seven-week high. Brazilian coffee buyers are holding back supplies of coffee from the market in hopes of higher prices, tightening the cash market and boosting prices.

In addition, the prospect of continued drought in Minas Gerais state, Brazil’s largest Arabica coffee producing region, is supporting Arabica prices. Robusta supplies are tightening and supporting Robusta prices as the General Department of Customs reported on Monday that Vietnam’s coffee exports in October fell 11.6 percent from the previous month to 45,412 tons and Vietnam’s coffee exports in the first 10 months fell 11.1 percent from the same period last year to 1.15 million tons.

Despite favorable weather in Brazil, supply and demand factors are being overlooked as investors pump money into commodities following the US election.

Vietnam’s low export data in recent months, along with a rising US dollar, has caused both domestic and international coffee markets to rise continuously. In addition, information about consecutive storms and rains targeting key coffee harvesting areas in Vietnam has created the threat of supply disruption.

The Buon Ma Thuot Coffee Association forecasts that the 2024/25 coffee crop in Dak Lak could decrease by 5-10% compared to the previous crop. The reason is that thousands of hectares of coffee suffered from drought and water shortages during the 2024 dry season, affecting the growth of the trees.

Gia Lai is currently one of the key coffee production and export localities in Vietnam. In the first 10 months of 2024, the province's export turnover was 750 million USD, reaching 100% of the yearly plan and increasing by 29.39% over the same period last year.

The market is also watching the US administration’s trade policy after Donald Trump won the presidential election. This situation could increase capital flows into speculative agricultural products, especially coffee, helping prices continue to rise in the short term.
