The replica will be on permanent display at the Ho Chi Minh City Museum of Fine Arts from September 15, 2023. The work is an exact replica of the original Olmec head, called “The King”. The original work dates back more than 3,000 years and is part of a group of 17 colossal head sculptures (over 2 meters high and weighing over 2 tons).
This is the most notable symbol of the Olmec culture - the oldest civilization in Mexico and the American continent. The original of this work is located in the Xalapa Anthropology Museum, Mexico.
The Ho Chi Minh City Museum of Fine Arts has designed a special exhibition area for this work. Images of the Mexican rainforest in the area where the original heads were discovered are also on display here.

The Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Museum of Fine Arts explained: “The Museum of Fine Arts has the opportunity to preserve a replica of the Olmec head statue, a relic that is not only a symbol of artistic creativity, but also contributes to reflecting the richness and diversity of religious, social and cultural concepts of an ancient civilization."
Alejandro Negrín - Mexican Ambassador to Vietnam pointed out that the reintroduction of this work is a collaboration between the agencies of the two countries and this work will show the Vietnamese people a very important period in Mexico's thousand-year history.

The diplomat explained that there are only two Mexican works in Vietnam. One is the sculpture "Totem City Stories" by the great sculptor Paloma Torres, which was presented to the city of Da Nang in 2017. The second work is a copy of the Olmec head statue called "The King" mentioned above.
The inauguration of the replica statue will be a living testament to the friendship and solidarity between Mexico and Vietnam.
