This was affirmed by Dr. Ngo Phuong Lan, President of the Vietnam Association for the Promotion of Cinema Development at the press conference introducing the DANAFF III program on the afternoon of June 3 in Hanoi . The event was organized by the People's Committee of Da Nang City in coordination with the Vietnam Association for the Promotion of Cinema Development, with the participation of many leaders of departments, ministries, branches, the People's Committee of Da Nang City, and domestic and foreign filmmakers.
DANAFF III will officially take place from June 29 to July 5 in Da Nang City. More than 100 films have been selected for the programs in DANAFF III. The number of film screenings has increased to 200. This year's program content has been expanded with many new highlights, notably the launch of the program "Asian Cinema Panorama" - selecting excellent and successful Asian cinema works at international film festivals in the past year, along with films selected by DANAFF for their premiere. This year also marks the appearance of the "Asian Film Critics Award" in the program "Asian Cinema Panorama".
Dr. Ngo Phuong Lan also said that the special highlight of the Film Festival - “DANAFF Talents - DANAFF Potential Talents” is a series of training and connecting activities and developing film projects for young and promising talents in the field of cinema, including: “Talent Incubation” Workshop on acting, “Project Incubator” and Master Class for filmmakers. The program creates an environment and conditions for young film talents to learn, exchange, improve and access a network of domestic and international experts.
Marking a new development step at DANAFF III, the “Project Incubator” was first organized as a key activity within the framework of DANAFF Talents, with two main categories: Asian Art Film Projects and Vietnamese Film Projects of All Genres. From the series of submitted projects, the Organizing Committee selected 14 potential projects to participate in the development round. The best project in the Asian Art Film category will receive a prize worth 8,000 Euros from the French National Cinema Center, along with 3 months of intensive development support from mylab - a consulting and incubation program for independent film projects in Southeast Asia. In addition, the American Cinema Association also awarded a prize worth 5,000 USD to the best project in the Vietnamese Film Project of All Genres category.
The “Project Incubator” has received a lot of attention from domestic and international filmmakers, including Mr. Christian Jeune - Director of Film Selection, Vice President of Cannes Film Festival; Mr. Kim Min Young - producer of the film “Grave Digger”; Ms. Isabelle Glachant - producer of many films by Vuong Tieu Soai including “Shanghai Dream” (Jury Award of Cannes Film Festival 2005)...
Notably, the selective film screening program “Half a century of Vietnamese films about war” was organized on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the country’s reunification. The program, coordinated by the Vietnam Film Institute, introduced 22 typical works, providing a multi-dimensional cinematic perspective on war. Also in this program was a seminar “Imprints of Vietnamese war films since the country’s reunification” to comprehensively evaluate the achievements, values and position of war films in the development of cinema.
In the Cinema Spotlight program of DANAFF III, the Organizing Committee, in collaboration with the Korean Cultural Center in Vietnam, the Korean Film Commission, and the Korean Film Institute, selected and introduced 14 representative works, produced from the 60s of the 20th century to the present through the program "Imprints of Korean cinema through each period of time". The films demonstrate the artistic mettle and cultural depth typical of the land of Kim Chi, including 3 films by veteran Korean filmmaker Im Kwon-taek, which will be introduced to Vietnamese audiences and delegates. Along with the screening activity is the seminar "Korean cinema: Lessons from international success and experience in developing the film industry".
In addition to the new features, DANAFF III continues to maintain the activities that have become hallmarks of previous seasons, such as: The opening and closing ceremonies and award ceremonies are broadcast live on VTV; two categories of competing films include 14 films in the Asian Films category and 12 films in the Vietnamese Films category; the program "Today's Vietnamese Cinema" with 18 new Vietnamese films produced in the past year.
Speaking at the meeting, Dr. Dinh Thi Mai, Deputy Head of the Central Propaganda and Mass Mobilization Commission, affirmed that the DANAFF Organizing Committee is very professional, methodical, and has made great efforts to organize the Festival in the current difficult conditions. DANAFF is a very successful public-private partnership model that needs to be further expanded.
Associate Professor Dr. Ta Quang Dong, Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, highly appreciated the contributions of the Vietnam Cinema Promotion Association, especially the dedication and leadership of Dr. Ngo Phuong Lan - President of the Association, in promoting academic cinema activities to develop the Association's career, creating a healthy and positive cinema environment, attracting the increasing participation of domestic and international producers, directors and artists. These efforts have contributed practically to the construction and promotion of the Vietnamese cinema industry in a modern, professional and integrated direction.
