"We are glad to see that all parties are playing a constructive role and creating conditions for de-escalation and political settlement of the Ukraine crisis," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Ning said on January 24.
She said China positively assessed the desire of the Trump administration to end the conflict in Ukraine as soon as possible and declared its readiness for dialogue with the United States.
The Chinese diplomat also stressed that peaceful negotiations remain the only way to resolve conflicts. She stated that China is willing to engage in dialogue with other countries to achieve peace and resolve conflicts.
"China is committed to promoting negotiations for peace ," spokesman Mao Ning said.
However, she neither confirmed nor denied Mr Trump's claim that he discussed ending the Russia-Ukraine conflict in a phone call with Chinese President Xi Jinping on January 17.
Immediately after taking office on January 20, US President Donald Trump began implementing his commitment to quickly end the conflict in Ukraine. According to the Wall Street Journal , he directed his team to work to end the conflict between Russia and Ukraine within the first 100 days of his term.
Mr. Trump announced that he wanted to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin "immediately" to discuss a solution to the nearly three-year war in Ukraine.
On Russia's side, the Kremlin said that the country is always ready to negotiate and is waiting for a signal from the Trump administration.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said Moscow is ready for peace talks and may even make some preliminary contacts now.
He pointed out that Russia and the US can still find “a lot of common ground” when it comes to the most pressing issues, including the Ukraine conflict, and recalled the “pragmatic” and “business-like” relationship with President Trump during his first term in the White House.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is concerned about a private meeting between the two US and Russian leaders. He believes that Moscow could "manipulate" President Trump's expectations to achieve peace.
So far, Mr. Trump and his team have not presented any official plan to end the conflict. However, according to some sources, Mr. Trump's plan is to freeze the conflict, forcing Russia and Ukraine to the negotiating table with certain concessions.
According to Mr. Trump, Kiev is ready to negotiate and is now just waiting for a signal from Moscow. He also warned of imposing sanctions if Russia refuses to sit at the negotiating table.
"If we don't make a deal quickly, I will have no choice but to impose tariffs and sanctions on any Russian goods coming into the United States and other countries," Trump wrote on the social network Truth Social on January 22.
