A Chinese scientific expedition team returned home on October 27 after completing an Arctic survey mission with the support of the scientific research vessel Tansuo-3 (Exploration 3) and the manned deep-diving submarine Fendouzhe (Resilient One).
Specifically, the Fendouzhe submarine successfully conducted 43 deep dives and coordinated underwater operations with the Jiaolong submarine - the vehicle that made China's first deep dive under the Arctic ice.
During the survey, the Fendouzhe submarine collected many valuable water, sediment, rock and biological samples, as well as rich monitoring data. The analysis of the samples is expected to support in-depth studies on the current rapid climate change in the Arctic and the adaptation mechanism of polar biota.
During its 56-day stay in the Arctic Ocean, the team carried out a series of scientific surveys, including the Fendouzhe's first deep dive in the Gakkel Mountains in the Eurasian Basin, where sea ice coverage exceeds 80%. The maximum depth reached by the Fendouzhe during this dive was 5,277m.
During the expedition, the Jiaolong submarine team also made more than 10 dives in the Arctic. The two submarines, Jiaolong and Fendouzhe, coordinated well in underwater missions, including searching, mutual positioning, and live video recording.
Previously, on July 22, together with the manned deep-diving submarine Fendouzhe, the Tansuo-3 departed from Sanya, Hainan Province (China) to conduct a survey jointly organized by the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
The expedition is a clear demonstration of the operational capabilities of the scientific research vessel Tansuo-3 and the manned deep-diving submarine Fendouzhe in the harsh conditions of the polar ice region. In addition, by pioneering the construction of a mobile ship-submarine combined diving model, China has become the first country to continuously conduct deep-diving missions by manned submarines in the Arctic Ocean region./.
