Before storm Wipha, Hanoi people cleaned vegetables and meat in supermarkets

(Dan Tri) - This morning, Hanoi residents went to supermarkets to buy food before Typhoon Wipha made landfall. The sudden increase in customers caused many essential goods at supermarkets to "sell out" but there was no hoarding.

Many shelves of vegetables and meat are "sold out"

The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting said that at 7:00 a.m. on July 22, storm Wipha (storm No. 3) was right next to the eastern coast of Hung Yen - Ninh Binh, about 25km east of Hung Yen , about 45km northeast of Ninh Binh with a strong intensity of level 9, gusting to level 11.

Fearing the storm’s long-term impact, many Hanoians rushed to supermarkets and traditional markets to stock up on necessities. At some large supermarkets in Hanoi , the number of customers increased dramatically, causing the shelves of vegetables and meat to run out of stock at times.

After taking her children to school, Ms. Thu Loan (Thanh Xuan, Hanoi) stopped by a supermarket near her house to buy food for her family. As soon as she entered, Ms. Loan was surprised to see that the vegetable and meat stalls were almost "sold out".

“Usually at this time the supermarket is quite empty, and the goods are still fully stocked. But today, everyone went shopping early to avoid the storm, so the goods sold out very quickly. I just stopped by the traditional market and it was no better, there were only a few types of not-so-fresh vegetables and fruits left,” said Ms. Loan.

At a large supermarket on Khuat Duy Tien Street (Thanh Xuan, Hanoi), the number of customers coming to shop this morning was also unusually high. The vegetable and fresh food area was always overloaded, many people had to wait in long lines to wait their turn.

Staff here shared that the number of customers increased sharply since last night, forcing them to constantly replenish stalls and increase staff shifts.

Mr. Quoc Minh (Dong Da, Hanoi) said that due to concerns that the storm would affect travel and shopping, he proactively went to buy enough necessities for his family to use for 3 days, in case of bad weather developments. "The storm may cause difficulties in the next few days, so I conveniently went to the supermarket and bought enough for 3 days," Mr. Minh said.

Similarly, the WinMart store in Thanh Xuan ward also had a lot of people coming to shop. The busiest area was the meat and vegetable section. By 10:30 a.m., the shelves of meat and fresh vegetables in the store were empty, and people had to line up to pay. The staff here said that the number of people coming to the supermarket to shop had increased sharply, and vegetables were sold out early.

Ms. Mai Chi (Thanh Xuan Ward, Hanoi) said that she was worried about the impact of the storm and the difficulty of traveling, so she proactively went shopping for enough necessities for her family. "I arrived late so all the fresh vegetables and meat were gone. I only had a few bunches of herbs left, so I bought frozen food to cook," she said.

Similarly, at some traditional markets in Thanh Xuan ward, by 10am, most of the vegetable stalls were out of leafy vegetables, with only a few herbs and fruits remaining. The meat stalls also did not have many items left.

Customer purchasing power increased sharply compared to normal days.

AEON Vietnam representative shared that AEON department stores and supermarkets in the North on the weekend of July 19 and 20 recorded a sharp increase in customer purchasing power compared to normal days. At AEON Hai Phong, purchasing power increased by about 30% compared to normal days. Customers focused on buying mainly essential food items such as vegetables, fruits, fish, meat, instant noodles, rice, etc.

This unit stated that AEON department stores and supermarkets in the North have increased their stock levels by 2-3 times compared to normal days, focusing on essential products and some items that need to be used in situations of power or water outages such as flashlights, raincoats, and disposable food containers.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Bich Van, Communications Director of Central Retail Vietnam Group - owner of supermarket chains Go!, Big C, Tops Martket - also said that currently, purchasing power is still taking place as usual in supermarkets in the North; there are no signs of people hoarding goods.

"However, because of experience with previous storms and floods, the company will ensure enough essential food supplies at the most stable prices for supermarket systems in the North, helping people feel secure against storms and not worry about shortages and price hikes," she shared.

Mr. Nguyen Van Manh, Director of WinMart Thang Long supermarket, also said that as soon as information about storm No. 3 was received, the WinMart/WinMart+ system proactively implemented a contingency plan, closely coordinating with the Department of Industry and Trade of localities to ensure that essential goods and food are always available.

For vegetables and fruits, which are in high demand during storms, the unit proactively coordinated supply from Lam Dong to the North to promptly serve affected areas. The amount of vegetable and meat orders alone increased by more than 50% compared to normal days. “In any situation, we strive to transport promptly, avoid disruptions in the supply chain, and ensure that goods are always ready to serve customers,” said Mr. Manh.

He also said that as soon as storm No. 3 was warned, purchasing power at many WinMart/WinMart+ points of sale increased dramatically, with some supermarkets recording sales increases of up to 200% compared to normal days. In this situation, the system quickly implemented a plan to supply goods to stabilize supply and prices.

To respond to storm No. 3, the Ministry of Industry and Trade requires urgent development and implementation of a plan to reserve essential goods suitable to the actual conditions of each locality.

The Department of Domestic Market Management and Development (Ministry of Industry and Trade) has just issued urgent document No. 1819 dated July 21 to the Department of Industry and Trade of provinces and cities regarding emergency response to storm No. 3 Wipha.

Accordingly, the Department of Domestic Market Management and Development requested the Department of Industry and Trade of provinces and cities in the affected areas to urgently deploy solutions to ensure market stability and meet people's essential needs in all situations.

The Department requested localities to direct the Market Management force to regularly monitor market developments and situations at the grassroots level. At the same time, it is necessary to strengthen monitoring, inspection and control activities to promptly detect and strictly handle violations of the law in the field of trade, especially for essential goods serving production, business and people's lives before, during and after the rainy and stormy season.

In particular, in the event of natural disasters, localities need to proactively handle acts of taking advantage of the situation to speculate, hoard goods, or unreasonably increase prices, especially for food, foodstuffs, and construction materials.
