Ms. Phan Thi Mai and her husband Hoang Kim Khanh, owners of the Mailisa beauty salon chain, have just been prosecuted and detained to clarify their smuggling behavior in the case that occurred at MK Skincare Company and related units and localities.
Mailisa chain owner accused of selling cheap, substandard Chinese goods at high prices
Initial investigation determined that from 2020 to 2024, with the purpose of importing cosmetics to Vietnam to sell for profit through the Mailisa beauty salon chain, Ms. Mai and her husband agreed to buy cosmetics produced in Guangzhou (China) at cheap prices, not ensuring quality and ingredients as declared, not qualified for a certificate of free circulation (CFS) in China.
Then colluded with Chinese subjects, signed fake contracts, changed the origin of cosmetics (from Guangzhou, China to Hong Kong) to get CFS in Hong Kong.
According to research, MK SKINCARE is an enterprise that imports and distributes cosmetics under the brand name Doctor Magic. This company was founded by Mr. Hoang Kim Khanh in 2017, with a charter capital of 10 billion VND.
Meanwhile, the legal entity operating the Mailisa beauty salon chain is Mailisa Trading and Service Company Limited (abbreviated as Mailisa Company).
Mailisa Company was established in July 2018, headquartered in Hanoi . This enterprise has a charter capital of 15 billion VND, owned by Mr. Hoang Kim Khanh.
Mailisa Company's business data shows that the company's revenue and net profit from business operations have grown steadily from 2019 to present.
In 2019, just about 1 year after its official launch, Mailisa achieved a revenue of 61.7 billion VND. Due to low cost of capital, just over 6 billion VND, the business achieved a net profit from business operations of nearly 33 billion VND.
By 2020, revenue increased to 158 billion VND, 2.5 times higher than the previous year. High sales led to net profit from business activities increasing to 113 billion VND, 3.5 times higher than in 2019.
By 2023, Mailisa recorded revenue of VND 215 billion and net profit from business operations of nearly VND 123 billion, continuing to double compared to the previous year.
Huge profit margin
Notably, due to low cost of goods sold, Mailisa's gross profit margin (Gross profit margin = Gross profit/Net revenue × 100%) is at a "huge" level.
In 2019 - 2023, gross profit margin was recorded to fluctuate at 86 - 89%. This is an extremely rare gross profit margin in other industries and fields.
Notably, in a video posted in 2023 on the TikTok channel with millions of followers, Ms. Mai said that the system's cosmetic products always sell very well, even "selling out containers".
Ms. Mai also said that many cosmetics are expensive due to the cost of renting premises, celebrity advertising, 50-70% discounts for agents, etc., all included in the selling price. At the same time, she affirmed that in order for a business to develop and survive for a long time, it must do the right thing to be protected by the law.
As of November 18, some shopping carts on the official TikTok channel of the Mailisa beauty salon chain have no products for sale. All have been hidden or removed.
Previously, this chain regularly livestreamed to sell cosmetics of this brand on social networking sites Facebook and TikTok, with hundreds of thousands and millions of followers and brought in extremely attractive sales.
Of which, TikTok channel Mailisa - Doctor Magic has more than 372,000 followers and 7.8 million likes, and has sold nearly 74,000 products.
Similarly, the TMV Mailisa TikTok channel with more than 3.1 million followers shows that nearly 650,000 products have been sold.
Mailisa channel with nearly 182,000 followers also has nearly 283,000 products sold.
Notably, on the official Facebook fanpage with more than 2.8 million followers, Mailisa beauty salon still posts new articles related to cosmetic activities, but there is no longer content related to Doctor Magic products since the most recent session on November 12.
Mailisa beauty salon said: "Currently, while the authorities are conducting periodic inspections, Mailisa is temporarily suspending the provision of products and some services to cooperate with the authorities' requests."
