Director General of the General Department of Sports and Physical Training, Head of Delegation Dang Ha Viet frankly assessed the successes and shortcomings of the Vietnamese sports delegation at the 32nd SEA Games.
PV: How do you evaluate the results that the Vietnamese sports delegation achieved at the 32nd SEA Games?
Mr. Dang Ha Viet: - On the last day of competition of SEA Games 32 , we had very commendable achievements when weightlifter Nguyen Quoc Toan (89kg weight class) broke 3 SEA Games records, even though Toan is still very young.
This is a very good sign because weightlifting is a sport in the Olympic competition system. Overall, we achieved the set target in terms of achievements, ranking first in the whole delegation with 136 gold medals.
How do you evaluate the organization of the host country Cambodia?
- At this SEA Games, Vietnam supported Cambodia a lot in the organization. Because we just organized the 31st SEA Games and you also asked for help regarding the opening and closing ceremonies... To have a successful 32nd SEA Games, I affirm that Vietnam partly contributed.
In terms of expertise, we support Cambodia to achieve the best results. For example, in Vovinam, Cambodia won 11 gold medals, ranking first overall, while we won 7 gold medals in this sport. Thus, Vietnamese sports do not dominate the strong sports.
How do you evaluate the results achieved in the Olympic events of the Vietnamese sports delegation?
- At the 32nd SEA Games, Vietnam's strong sports such as archery, shooting, rowing, canoeing... are not included. In addition, in martial arts such as judo and karate, we are only allowed to register for 70% of the number of events. Therefore, evaluating achievements in Olympic sports needs to be comprehensive.
The Vietnamese sports delegation won over 50% of the gold medals in Olympic sports. I think this was a successful congress in all aspects for the Vietnamese sports delegation.
Are you surprised that we exceeded the gold medal target and left Thailand far behind in the rankings?
- First of all, it must be said that in sports competitions there are many factors that affect the results. At the 32nd SEA Games, the weather conditions were harsh and especially the regional sports level was increasingly developed, countries had huge investments because the brand value of the SEA Games was increasingly raised very high.
In addition, at the SEA Games, many countries have policies to naturalize athletes. These are mysterious factors that we cannot immediately evaluate.
The fact that the Vietnamese sports delegation exceeded the target of winning gold medals is due to the athletes' great efforts and excellent performance. We have a talented group of young athletes. Many athletes, although participating in the SEA Games for the first time and still young, have excelled in winning gold medals and even breaking records.
The gold medal target is only a forecast, while the actual competition has many other related issues. I would like to emphasize again that the Vietnamese sports delegation was successful in terms of results.
What are the most impressive marks at SEA Games 32?
- We achieved good results in many events and were superior to the second-placed team, Thailand. There were some achievements that I had to admire for the athletes' efforts, such as the case of Nguyen Thi Oanh winning 2 gold medals in athletics only about 20 minutes apart, or the mothers of 2 children who still competed excellently to win gold medals.
All those images have a great influence not only on sports activities, but also help Vietnamese people always contribute to the country.
From the success of the 32nd SEA Games, how do you evaluate the chances of the Vietnamese sports delegation competing for medals at the Asian Games taking place next September?
- It is really difficult in the Asian Games arena because we have poor training conditions, not many experts, and not many high-level coaches. TTVN not only needs a good coach, but also a team that can analyze the athletes' strengths and weaknesses, in order to make adjustments.
Currently, we do not have a scientific team to support athletes. For now, Vietnam still has to go to training centers around the world to ask for support and analysis. However, due to competition for achievements, they will never fully expose it.
Because of these difficult problems, Vietnam has only been able to ensure achievements in the region. As for Asia or the Olympics, it is a very long step that the sports industry will have to focus heavily on.
For the upcoming Asiad, we hope to compete for medals in archery, shooting, rowing, weightlifting, sepak takraw, and some martial arts...
Thank you for the conversation!
