The Ministry of Industry and Trade has just issued Circular 50 stipulating the roadmap for applying the blending ratio of biofuels with traditional fuels in Vietnam. From June 1, 2026, unleaded gasoline (according to current national technical standards) must be blended into E10 gasoline (mixing 10% ethanol into unleaded gasoline) for use in gasoline engines nationwide.
At the same time, the blending and mixing of E5 RON 92 gasoline (mixing 5% ethanol with RON 92 gasoline) for use in gasoline engines will be implemented until the end of December 2030. Thus, the roadmap for applying E10 gasoline is 6 months later than the plan previously outlined by the Ministry of Industry and Trade in the draft circular.
The Minister of Industry and Trade will review and adjust the blending ratio of biofuels or add mineral gasoline as appropriate at different times. This aims to ensure energy security, environmental protection, and consumer rights.
Furthermore, B5 and B10 biodiesel are not yet required to be blended for use in diesel engines. The Ministry of Industry and Trade encourages organizations and individuals to participate in the production and trading of these biodiesel products.

Previously, starting from August 1st, the two largest petroleum distribution companies in the country, Vietnam National Petroleum Group ( Petrolimex ) and Vietnam Oil Corporation (PV Oil), piloted the sale of E10 gasoline in Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, and Hai Phong.
However, some consumers remain hesitant about E10 bioethanol fuel, especially in older vehicles. Nevertheless, Dr. Dao Duy Anh, Deputy Director of the Department of Innovation, Green Transition and Industrial Promotion (Ministry of Industry and Trade), stated that, based on discussions with organizations in the US, vehicles manufactured from 2000 to the present use E15 fuel, while Americans have been using E10 fuel since 1980.
"This suggests that the impact of this type of gasoline on older vehicles is probably negligible. However, to obtain an accurate assessment, in the coming time, the Ministry of Industry and Trade will coordinate with relevant associations and units to conduct tests on older vehicle models to clearly determine the impact of E10 gasoline on engines," he said.
Speaking at a biofuel development workshop in August, Associate Professor Pham Huu Tuyen, Director of the Center for Research on Power Sources and Autonomous Vehicles (Hanoi University of Science and Technology), stated that test results showed that the efficiency of using E10 gasoline in cars and motorcycles is generally equivalent to, or even improved upon, conventional gasoline in terms of power and fuel consumption.
"Our research and studies worldwide show that E10 gasoline is suitable for most vehicles currently in circulation; however, it may have a certain impact on older vehicles using carburetors," he said.
