Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak said that the country is ready to continue exporting gas to Europe via multiple routes, as the contract for transporting fuel through Ukraine is expected to expire at the end of this year.

In an interview with state television channel Rossiya 24 on December 25, Mr. Novak said that the future of gas transportation depends on the consensus between the Ukrainian government and the European Union (EU).
“For our part, we have always affirmed our readiness to continue supplying gas not only through the existing route (i.e. the route through Ukraine),” he stressed.
Despite political pressure, Mr Novak asserted: "Russian gas is more attractive in terms of price and transportation for buyers in the region".
The impending end of supplies through Kiev raises significant concerns for countries such as Slovakia, which relies heavily on Gazprom PJSC to meet domestic demand, even as much of Europe has gradually reduced its reliance on gas transported via Moscow.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said that his country will not allow gas originating from Russia to transit.
The event comes amid forecasts of colder weather across much of Europe, which is likely to increase gas demand while inventories are falling faster than usual.
The tightening market is making it difficult for traders to secure enough gas through 2025, as they compete with Asia for seaborne supplies of liquefied natural gas (LNG).
Russia supplies gas to Europe through various routes.
In addition to the route through Ukraine, fuel is also transported via a branch of the TurkStream pipeline across the Black Sea.
Each line currently transports about 15 billion cubic meters per year. Supplies are also transported by LNG tankers.
Mr. Novak said that the total volume of Russian gas exported to Europe in the period from January to November this year exceeded 50 billion cubic meters.
Previously, in September 2024, President Vladimir Putin announced that Moscow was also ready to restore gas supplies to Europe via the remaining Nord Stream pipeline through the Baltic Sea.
