Major General Nguyen Van Khiem - commonly known as Sau Tri (1924-2023, from Go Cong, Tien Giang ), was born into a family with a patriotic tradition. His grandfather Nguyen Dinh Hoe was a mandarin of the Nguyen Dynasty, and his grandmother was the daughter of a high-ranking mandarin. His grandfather Nguyen Dinh Hoe participated in the patriotic movement, was exposed, and returned to Go Cong to hide his identity, bringing his father Nguyen Van Dong with him.
The father's example of patriotism was passed on to Nguyen Van Dong; he also participated in the patriotic movement, was a member of the Annam Communist Party, and worked in France. In 1930, he returned to the country, was arrested by the French, brutally tortured, and was released in 1937. A short time later, he sacrificed himself. The sacrifice of his father left a deep impression on the soul and memory of the 15-year-old boy Khiem; and he naturally followed the revolution.
To keep it a secret, during the anti-French period, he changed his name to Pham Duy Hoang, and during the anti-American period, he changed his name to Nguyen Duc Tri (Sau Tri).

In late 1948 and early 1949, the Military Region 7 Intelligence Department was established, and Mr. Sau Tri was appointed as Deputy Head of the Department in charge of intelligence. During this time, he often represented the Southern Military Intelligence Department to directly report the situation to comrade Le Duc Anh. In 1952, he returned to take charge of the Saigon - Cho Lon Special Zone Military Intelligence Department.
In 1953-1954, the Saigon - Cho Lon Command assigned him the task of finding a way to infiltrate the enemy ranks to operate. Thanks to his sister who married the Director of the Public Security Department, he was accepted to work there. This was an extremely favorable position for him to collect important information and documents from the enemy and send them back to the organization.
His brother-in-law had a high position and suggested many times that he go to school to get promoted, but he pretended to be reserved and only asked to be an office secretary. With this position, he had access to confidential documents. Many times he was able to transfer documents about the enemy's planned raids and the roundups of our cadres by the Public Security Department to comrade Hai Van (Standing Member of the Regional Party Committee), thanks to which we avoided heavy losses.
He repeatedly "appeared like a ghost" and infiltrated Saigon's inner city to gather information, build and consolidate, and develop a strategic intelligence network... He was considered one of the intelligence soldiers who had infiltrated deep into the enemy ranks for many years, obtaining extremely valuable information and documents to serve the revolution, to serve the defeat of the invading American imperialists such as: documents on the strategic steps of the war the US conducted in Vietnam, the US escalation, de-escalation, news about the war expanding to CPC...
Thanks to his position, Mr. Sau Tri and his wife contributed to protecting the safety of comrades in the Regional Party Committee. During this time, he once reported news to comrade Ba Duan at comrade Hai Van's house. Another time, when he discovered documents of the Region falling into the enemy's hands, he reported them in time so that we could track down the traitor.
From January 1963 to August 1965, he was the Head of the A20 Intelligence Group. The group's mission was to build a city intelligence network, build secret traffic, and reconnaissance troops. The brothers in the group were brave and intelligent soldiers, both acting as strategic intelligence and capable of fighting against enemy sweeps. In 1963, the group effectively served the coup that overthrew the Ngo Dinh Diem regime.
From 1965 to 1968, the Southern Intelligence Department achieved many brilliant achievements. In 1968, the Southern Intelligence Department was established, specializing in espionage and strategic intelligence; he held the position of Deputy Director, then Director. In his position, he contributed to building a complete intelligence cluster, developing the old intelligence force in the South, effectively serving the war against America.
Beside him were intelligence soldiers who had infiltrated and climbed high in the enemy ranks for many years, obtaining extremely valuable information and documents to serve the revolution, to serve the defeat of the invading American imperialists such as: documents on the strategic steps of the war the US conducted in Vietnam, the US escalation, de-escalation, news about the war expanding to Cambodia...
Belonging to the generation of veteran intelligence officers, at the same time as Pham Ngoc Thao, Vu Ngoc Nha, Pham Xuan An, Le Huu Thuy, Dang Tran Duc... Major General Nguyen Van Khiem is a person who has made many worthy contributions to the cause of national liberation and unification, contributing to the glory of Vietnam's strategic intelligence sector.
After 1975, he worked at the Ministry of National Defense . He died in 2023, just after turning 100 years old.
