The 2024 university admissions season has seen many top universities abandon the high school transcript admission method. For example, Hanoi Medical University announced that it will no longer consider high school transcripts for admission.
National Economics University no longer considers admission based on academic records, but reserves half of its quota for admission based on certificate scores and separate exams.

Ho Chi Minh City University of Law also only enrolls students by two methods: early admission according to the school's enrollment plan, accounting for 45% of the total enrollment target, including direct admission, and admission based on high school graduation exam results, accounting for 55% of the total enrollment target. There is no longer a method of admission based solely on academic records...
The fact that top schools have stopped considering admission based on academic records is not surprising because public opinion has long recognized that the quality of academic records is not as expected. The phenomenon of a flood of ten points, an overabundance of certificates and high scores in education has existed for a long time. Therefore, there is always a gap between actual ability and final scores.
Although top schools say no to admission based on transcripts, many other universities consider this a gold mine for admission.
Specifically, more than 60 schools have announced that they will use transcripts for university admissions this year, including top schools and military schools. Even Foreign Trade University plans to enroll 4,130 students for its headquarters in Hanoi and two campuses in Ho Chi Minh City and Quang Ninh.
The school uses the same admission methods as last year. The school considers high school transcripts in three groups: those who participated in national science and technology competitions for excellent students; those who won third prize or higher in city-level competitions for excellent students; and those who are students of specialized schools.
The new point is that with the method of using transcript scores, Foreign Trade University requires candidates to achieve a minimum of 24 points on the high school graduation exam or higher, according to the admission combination.
Some other prestigious universities also use academic transcripts for admission but often combine them with other criteria, similar to the Foreign Trade University. For example, the University of Technology, Ho Chi Minh City National University has an admission method that combines three criteria including academic performance, personal achievements, social activities and literature and arts. The 6-term high school study score is only one of the three components of the academic criteria.
Meanwhile, most schools have announced that the admission method based on transcripts only uses the results of 2 to 6 semesters of high school. Many schools consider up to the end of the first semester of grade 12 and have opened the registration portal such as Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology, Van Lang, Nguyen Tat Thanh, Hong Bang International.
Some schools such as Hanoi Industry and Hanoi Pedagogy 2 said they will consider admission based on academic records but have not announced specific conditions. However, these schools expect the conditions to be similar to last year.
