The working group of Cua Dai Border Guard Station propagates against IUU fishing to fishermen at Binh Dai Fishing Port.
Strengthen propaganda
Cua Dai Border Guard Station manages and protects the 27km-long coastline, with three coastal border communes: Binh Thang, Thua Duc and Thoi Thuan in Binh Dai district. Local people live mainly on fishing and aquaculture. The area has over 1,166 fishing vessels, including over 580 offshore fishing vessels with over 4,500 workers working directly at sea. This is the local spearhead economic sector; fishing activities help develop the local economy, and the material and spiritual life of the people is constantly improved. However, with a large number of fishing vessels fishing offshore, the risk of violating the sovereignty of foreign waters is very high. Implementing the direction of superiors on combating illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing (IUU), especially during the 180-day peak period determined to overcome and remove the EC's yellow card, Cua Dai Border Guard Station has focused on promoting information, propaganda, dissemination and education of the law, mobilizing fishermen to actively respond to combating IUU fishing, in order to prevent, reduce and stop fishing vessels and fishermen of Binh Dai district from illegally exploiting aquatic resources in foreign waters.
Major Vo Ngoc Trung - Party Secretary, Political Commissar of Cua Dai Border Guard Station said: Identifying propaganda against IUU fishing as a key task, in the past time, the unit has done a good job of coordinating with Party committees at all levels, authorities and local sectors and organizations to implement many solutions to manage, prevent and stop fishing vessels and fishermen from violating foreign waters. From the beginning of 2023 up to now, by many forms and measures such as: strictly managing, inspecting and controlling people and vehicles, writing news and propaganda articles on local radio stations, organizing concentrated and individual propaganda, propaganda on social networking sites (Zalo, Facebook), building skillful mass mobilization models...; establishing a working group to directly go to fishing ports to propagate when ships dock; Especially with the motto "Each time of checking and registering the means of transport entering and leaving the port is a propaganda", the unit has organized nearly 300 propaganda sessions on combating IUU fishing for over 3,500 fishermen.
Raising awareness for fishermen
Mr. Do Van Thuan, owner of Tan Trung Lap fishing boat business, residing in Hamlet 5, Binh Thang commune, shared: “Myself and the fishing boat owners in Binh Thang commune were analyzed by the officers at Cua Dai Border Guard Station to clearly explain the purpose and significance of combating IUU fishing, so we pay great attention every time the vehicle leaves the port, especially the national flag must be hung, all documents must be fully ensured according to the provisions of the law, especially I always ask the captain not to cross the border to illegally fish in the waters of other countries for immediate benefits, because I understand that if I am arrested by a foreign country, I will lose all my assets. In the past, neither I nor the fishermen of Binh Thang commune have exploited fish in violation of foreign waters”.
In addition to coordinating propaganda, the unit conducts inspections and reminds fishermen about installing and operating voyage monitoring equipment on fishing vessels; recording and submitting fishing logs in full accordance with regulations. Encourage fishermen to write a commitment not to violate the sovereignty of foreign waters... In addition, Cua Dai Border Guard Station also regularly visits, presents national flags and encourages fishermen to overcome difficulties to go offshore, both to catch seafood to develop the family economy and to participate in protecting the sovereignty of the sacred sea and islands of the Fatherland.
With a sense of responsibility and synchronous and drastic solutions, the collective of officers and soldiers of Cua Dai Border Guard Station has not only performed well the functions of patrolling, controlling and handling law violations in the coastal border communes, but also participated effectively in propaganda work against IUU fishing. Thereby, it has raised the awareness and consciousness of fishermen in complying with regulations on fishing at sea, actively contributing with all levels and sectors to soon remove the EC's yellow card on fishing for Vietnam.
