World market developments
The US Dollar Index (DXY) measuring the greenback's movements against six major currencies (EUR, JPY, GBP, CAD, SEK, CHF) decreased by 0.71% to 100.38.
The US dollar fell sharply, hitting its lowest level in more than a week against the Japanese yen, Swiss franc and euro, amid rising trade tensions.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said President Donald Trump would impose tariffs at the level he announced last month on trading partners that do not negotiate in “good faith”.
Previously, on May 16, credit rating agency Moody's announced a downgrade of the US credit rating from the highest level of Aaa to Aa1.
The news sent the greenback lower against major currencies after four straight weeks of gains.
The greenback fell against the Japanese yen to 144.665 yen, its lowest since May 8, in the previous session. The currency also fell to its lowest in more than a week against the Swiss franc, to 0.8317 franc.
In a contrasting development, the EUR increased 0.6% against the USD, reaching 1.1232 USD.
The British pound also rose 0.6% against the greenback, reaching $1.3355.
Despite the dollar's depreciation, New York Federal Reserve President John Williams noted that the greenback remains the world's reserve currency.
