Early season Central Highlands litchi prices are incredibly high

As a seasonal fruit, early season lychee has a sky-high price, even higher than durian.

According to a survey by a reporter from the Nguoi Lao Dong Newspaper , pink lychee or early-ripening lychee from the Central Highlands has begun to appear at some high-end fruit stores in Ho Chi Minh City at prices ranging from 150,000 - 200,000 VND/kg.

Because of the rarity and high price, high-end fruit stalls in rich markets like Tan Dinh (District 1) have not yet appeared.

This price is even higher than Musangking durian. But if consumers hesitate and do not decide to buy immediately, they will have to wait until the next day because there is very little stock.

Ms. Vo Thi Thu (living in Thu Duc City) quickly bought a bunch of Tay Nguyen lychees at a high-end food store even though she knew the price was very high.

"Last year, the lychee crop failed badly. I was so busy that I didn't have time to buy it before it was out of season, so this year I bought it right away. The first lychee of the season is still a bit sour, but the unique flavor is worth trying," said Ms. Thu.

Ms. Tran Ngoc Chau, owner of Tam Ngoc fruit farm (District 8), said that Dak Lak gardeners reported that lychees ripened early about a week ago. Ms. Chau can only collect 100 kg per day, selling wholesale to some fruit shops.

"Currently, there are some gardens that ripen early, and the price at the garden is already 80,000 VND/kg. Because of the high price, some traders come to collect fruits that are not yet ripe. I always remind gardeners to pick ripe fruits to ensure quality," said Ms. Chau.

Ms. Chau added that in preparation for a big event in Ho Chi Minh City, she is telling gardeners to stop harvesting for 3 days to have more and more ripe lychees. The Central Highlands lychee season will be in full swing for another month, so the price will still be high.

The lychee season is at its peak, so the market is very attractive. Some groups on social networks are selling wholesale Tay Nguyen lychees at prices ranging from 30,000 to 75,000 VND/kg. However, some accounts have also warned of the risk of being scammed by advertising cheap Tay Nguyen lychees, accepting deposits, and then blocking customers' accounts.

In fact, Tay Nguyen lychee is currently very rare and in high demand, traders come to the garden to buy.

The quality of lychee from the Central Highlands is often not as good as that of lychee from the North, but the advantage is that it ripens 2 months earlier and is closer to the Ho Chi Minh City market, so transportation costs are lower and it is fresher.
