"The Legend of Ten Thousand People - Noan" won the bronze prize at the 18th Japan International Manga Contest

On the afternoon of May 28, in Ho Chi Minh City, the Consulate General of Japan in Ho Chi Minh City held a ceremony to present a certificate of merit to the work Van Nhan Ky - Noan. This is a Vietnamese comic work that won the bronze prize at the 18th Japan International Manga Contest.

The Japan International Manga Contest has been held since 2007 to popularize manga (Japanese comics) culture to the world and promote international cultural exchange. This year's contest received the largest number of entries ever, with 716 entries from 95 countries and territories. The work Chronicles for Man - Noan (English title: Chronicles for Man - Noan ) from Vietnam by authors Nguyen Thuy Linh and Nguyen Trung Thach won the bronze prize at this contest.

After 2 years, "Van Nhan Ky - Noan" has just returned to readers.

Inspired by the Trinh - Nguyen - Tay Son conflict, Van Nhan Ky - Noan opens a fictional space of the 18th century, with the main character Ly Phuc Anh - a fallen prince on the run. The work was published by Du But Books in collaboration with Thanh Nien Publishing House in 2023 and was quickly received by readers. However, for some reasons, it was not until March of this year that the work was republished with a new licensing unit, Vietnam Women's Publishing House.

Speaking at the award ceremony, Mr. ONO Masuo, Consul General of Japan in Ho Chi Minh City, said that this is the 8th time the award has been given to a Vietnamese author. “This demonstrates the richness and potential of Vietnamese comic culture to the world. I hope that with this award, the works of the two of you will be known to more people, as well as providing more motivation for many Vietnamese comic artists to actively work in the international arena in the future,” Mr. ONO Masuo expressed.

Sharing after the award ceremony, author Nguyen Trung Thach said: “I am very happy that a work inspired by Vietnamese history has received attention from the contest organized by the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs . Because I believe that, although we are different in culture, language or circumstances, when talking about human fate, loneliness, choice, or desire to live, we all understand each other.”

The International Manga Award is one of the most prestigious international manga awards today.

Before Van Nhan Ky - Noan , Vietnam had a number of comic works that won this award such as: Dance of the Universe (silver prize in 2023); Dear Teacher Tuong, there is Teacher Vu coming to see you (bronze prize in 2022); Hell Gate (silver prize in 2016); Dragon God General (silver prize in 2015); Dragon Land (bronze prize in 2012).
