Writer Mai Anh Doan wrote The Cicada's Journey to the North Pole to inspire children with an adventurous heart and to believe in miracles.

The exciting, emotional adventure of Cicada and his friendship with the Polar Bear is both funny and affectionate in the book, bringing many interesting surprises to young readers.

Adventure to learn humility

What makes the main character - the "lazy" Cicada who is always ashamed and self-conscious because his innate chirping sound cannot be heard far, living oblivious to life on a hawthorn tree, have an adventure to the freezing cold North Pole in the summer? In such a strange and harsh world , how does the Cicada learn to adapt? Can humans and wild animals coexist peacefully?

Author Mai Anh Doan confided: “When writing this story, I hope to have a truly “satisfying” adventure with the characters. On that journey, a vast world opens up, every difference is an opportunity to learn new things. A cicada has never known a cold country, a polar bear knows nothing about summer, but they can accept each other to become best friends. Isn’t that wonderful? Differences are not for discrimination, but for us to learn tolerance and humility. The world we know is always much smaller than the real world out there.”

“I hope that the children, the young readers, will always keep their courage and imagination flying far. Like the Cicada with its small wings, it can still travel to the North Pole. I wish that we will always keep our kindness and our own dreams” - writer Mai Anh expressed.

Supporting children's souls

The journey of the Cicada miraculously survives in the cold snowy land, makes friends with strangers and finds his way back home with the courage and chivalry forged through the adventure in a world much larger than what he has ever known before.

Both Cicada and Polar Bear were taught by Mr. Mike-long-ears (an environmental activist in the snow country) how to appreciate the natural environment, not to destroy all species... Cicada's lesson is also to cherish what you have, even "flaws can become advantages, we should not be ashamed of anything"
(page 75).

As a mother raising two young children, author Mai Anh said that parents should nurture the wonderful “childlike world” in their children’s souls by allowing them to freely explore , imagine and dream without limits. That will “support the souls of young adults in the future in a way that we adults do not think of, because we ourselves were once children and believed in wonderful and extraordinary things.”
