Why did the 2025 Asia-Europe International New Music Festival eliminate AI composition?

On November 20, the Vietnam Musicians Association announced information about the 4th Asia-Europe International New Music Festival, scheduled to take place from November 27 to December 1, 2025 in Hanoi .

The event is considered one of the largest music exchange and cooperation activities in the region, gathering many musicians and artists from many countries.

After three seasons held in 2014, 2016 and 2018, the Festival has become a meeting place for the world's academic composers and performers, each season attracting more than 200 artists from more than 40 countries.

In 2025, the scale will be significantly expanded with about 300 domestic and international artists, including many faces from the Russian Federation, Tatarstan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Adygeya, Denmark, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, Spain, Japan, China, Australia and Laos.

Many major art units will participate such as: Vietnam National Symphony Orchestra, Vietnam National Academy of Music, Vietnam National Opera and Ballet and Military University of Culture and Arts.

Musician Do Hong Quan, Chairman of the Vietnam Union of Literature and Arts Associations, said the highlight of this year’s festival season is a concert dedicated to young Vietnamese composers. This is a space to honor the new generation of composers - those who are well-trained, have contemporary thinking but are still rooted in traditional musical materials.

He emphasized that all works performed in the Festival are purely creative products of the authors, without abusing technology or AI (artificial intelligence) when writing because "those techniques easily reveal a lack of depth and are not suitable for academic compositions". The organizing committee prioritizes selecting works that exploit folk materials in a contemporary spirit.

This year’s festival takes place at three locations: the Vietnam National Academy of Music, the Military University of Culture and Arts, and Cao Phong Heritage Park (Phu Tho). Audiences will enjoy a variety of performances, including symphonies, chamber music, and song performances.

The opening ceremony was held at 8:00 p.m. on November 27 at the Grand Concert Hall of the Vietnam National Academy of Music, opening with a concert by the Vietnam National Symphony Orchestra.

The following days will include a series of international chamber music concerts, a program introducing works by young Vietnamese musicians, a performance by the Moscow Contemporary Chamber Orchestra, an art exchange in Phu Tho and the closing ceremony on December 1.

In addition to performances, the Festival also has professional activities: a lecture by Professor Deqing Wen on the combination of Eastern and Western musical instruments (November 28), a conducting class with conductor Borja Quintas (November 28), and a chamber performance tutorial by the Moscow Contemporary Chamber Orchestra (December 2).
